Referred to by its residents as “Ypsi,” Downtown Ypsilanti, Michigan is a progressive city with a great community to back it up. The downtown area is separated into three distinct districts: Downtown, Depot Town, and W. Cross/Campus Town. It’s historically this way and has stayed so to preserve the beauty of the historical districts and the cultural variety. Downtown Ypsilanti’s residents pride themselves in the cultural abundances of art, music, and shopping.
Once you’re a renter in Downtown Ypsilanti, find time to visit the non-profit Dreamland Theater for local Puppet Theater or the Michigan Firehouse Museum, the town’s preservation of firefighting history. Order a cold beer at Ypsi’s Alehouse, or maybe taste a freshly baked scone from Terry Bakery. And be sure to tune into AM 1700 for Downtown Ypsilanti’s best community radio station. You’ll never miss a beat of downtown living with all of the wonderful attractions Ypsilanti holds.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Property Ratings at The Red Lion
I was by myself in a 2nd floor, 1 BR/1BA apartment with my dog Hershey. It's a really dog friendly community, and the complex is big enough to walk around a bit in different areas when you need to take your dog out. I always see management making improvements, like recently adding a picnic table and better signage on buildings. I felt really safe living in the gated community. I don't explore too much but the general area where it is situated felt pretty safe to me too, and there is a police station and hospital rather close. It is in a great area right next to a river trail (a 2 minute walk away/across the street, also great if you want to walk your dog). There is also a riverside park and downtown Ypsi at a walking distance from that trail/the complex. Rachel/management is always super pleasant and communicative via e-mail and the tenant portal. I also needed a fix on an oven problem that came up, and I found that the maintenance people were super nice, too. I didn't have any pest issues, but I saw that they always actively offer pest removal monthly, so I felt the maintenance offered was really good. The complex area is so beautiful in the spring with the trees and little bits of landscaping they have around, and I would frequently sit around outside with my dog. They also have little fenced off areas between 3 of the buildings, where you can let your dog run off leash a little bit. And there are many trash cans with poop bags to keep the area clean. Parking does get full at night some days, but the further parking is really only a minute walk to even get to building D at the very end of the lot (which is where I was), so it didn't really bother me. The only real recommendation I have is to get a dehumidifier maybe, because it's been getting pretty hot and humid in the summer and the wall AC mostly covers the living room because the humidity can keep the rest of the apartment pretty warm. From what I hear, Michigan has been getting more hot and humid in the summer lately, so that's probably a relatively recent issue. (I'm from Florida originally, and it did feel comparable to the weather over there in the summer.) But all other seasons felt really comfortable. Overall, I was really happy with my year at the Red Lion!
Extremely fast maintenence service, friendly staff, and good places to walk around at. I have loved my time at the Red Lion Apartments and recommend them to anyone looking to live in Ypsilanti!
Rent is affordable and I like the gate. Super convenient location right by the highway and downtown Ypsi. I also love that the river is right across the street.
Although there are situations that occur outside of the apartments control, how the staff handles the situation shows the character of the staff they employ and the values of the apartment complex. In general, I would say that you should not expect to be treated with respect and kindness. This is a pattern as I'm reading other reviews as well. The staff, in the apartment complex are horrible and just do what the required but are not empathetic or go beyond what is the bare minimum. If you decide to live here because of the location or the prices, it will definitely be a headache for you. Find an alternative apartment complex that will treat you better and put you first!
The parking situation is first come first serve which would be fine if it wasn't for car that are parked for months at a time. The 8 of the assigned spots that you have to pay for sat empty for 9 out of 12 months we lived there. The staff was friendly but unorganized while I lived there but ever since I left, it's been nothing but rudeness bordering on belligerent when trying to sort out an outstanding balance that showed up 3 months after moving out. Every time I've called to sort things out, they give me a different story. They will charge you a one time pet fee along with a monthly fee, but that doesn't cover any "damages" done by said pet. And the gate for the community is bypassed by anyone riding up behind people going through the gate. My building's front door sat unlocked for 6 months while we waited for it to be fixed. I found this place on this website which is why I had to let you all know that this is not the place for you.
I would NOT recommend, I can't wait to move out! After this experience I've learned "the price" isn't always right. I agree with the MOST recent reviews. -Gates are slow and useless, so "a gated community" serves no value. -Parking is very limited, if you don't get home around 7pm expect to park far away, near trees and a dumpster. -Management makes threats to sue and treat tenants like children, living inside of HER home. May seem nice initially but lacks basic customer service and interpersonal skills. -Office hours are very inconvenient M-F from 9-5. Management is not flexible outside of these hours. Has other personal obligations to attend to like baby showers and bingo night with friends. Rent at your own risk. Good Luck!
The Red Lion Apartments are a good choice for a student going to a local college. The rent is pretty cheap and there is free wifi. The only utility not included is electricity.
After living at The Lakeshore Apartments for two years, I had grown accustomed to the friendly and helpful staff, and amazing amenities offered at the apartment complex. The management office always worked with me for everything. As I prepared to end my lease there, they informed me of this newly updated apartment complex (and highly affordable) owned by their management company. Visiting them was a pleasant surprise. For the amount that you pay, you got a lot of bang for your buck, especially with it being all utilities included. If you are a student, grad or young professional considering living there, I would at least tell you to consider visiting and signing a lease. I promise it wont be a waste of time.
