Parks

Spanish Lake Park first opened to the public in the early 1970s. Spanish Lake Pond rests in 245 acres of timberland in an intimate corner of the unincorporated North St. Louis County community. Packed with amenities, the park provides a great outdoor experience for the entire family. In addition to being the home of Spirit Field, a handicap-accessible baseball field built in 2001 by the Cardinals Care program and the St. Louis Cardinals, the park harbors Spanish Lake, Sunfish Lake, and North Lake. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, and biking on well-groomed trails. In addition, the park has several playgrounds, five barbecue pavilions, soccer fields, two tennis courts, and even a 5,000-meter cross-country course. Park hours are 8 a.m. to one-half hour past sunset, and you must be licensed to enjoy the fishing opportunities. Spanish Lake Park is a very popular summer attraction.

Shopping

Several nearby shopping centers, including the St. Louis Outlet Mall (known by the locals as the Mills Outlet Mall), the Buzz Westfall Center, and the Shoppes at Cross Keys, open the door to a variety of shopping options. Each center features everything from shoe stores to video game retailers, but "The Mills" stays ahead of the pack with an indoor skateboard park and hockey rink. The neighborhood supports chain stores such as Aeropostale, Nike, and Bed, Bath & Beyond as well as a few specialty stores, such as the Putting Edge, which caters to the golfing crowd, and a movie theatre. Additional shopping facilities include auto parts stores and local grocery chains such as Save-A-Lot and Schnucks. Some neighboring suburbs host summer farmers' markets, but a ride down to St. Louis' historic Soulard Farmers Market makes a special year-round treat. Quick marts and thrifty dollar shops are plentiful and just right for that unexpected "last-minute" errand. No matter what your shopping needs and preferences, you can find the right store in Spanish Lake.

History

Most Missouri natives and residents may be surprised to learn that Spanish Lake, formerly Spanish Pond, has origins with Spain that date back to the 19th century and even the 1700s. The township received its title after being occupied by Spanish troops building a fort for Spain in 1768. Spanish Lake was tooled into a lively, well-to-do military, residential, and business region and prospered greatly throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, and into the 21st century. During its early beginnings, Spanish Lake was a significant military fort that also provided housing and visitors' quarters for prominent political figures of the day. Modern-day Spanish Lake benefits from the proximity to the Florissant Civic Center, which presents theatrical performances and art exhibits. The annual Florissant Valley of Flowers Festival draws visitors from Spanish Lake and elsewhere every spring.

Restaurants

There are many dining options in Spanish Lake, and several of the best include the local "mom-and-pop" country-kitchen style restaurants. For pizza lovers, Angelo's Pizzeria sits at the top of the list with rave reviews, a 4.5-star rating, reasonable prices, and loads of topping choices. If you prefer barbecue with a little side of "soul food," then Roper's Ribs is the place for you. Roper's is a family-owned St. Louis establishment, doing business since 1976. A brief drive to Old Town Florissant takes you to Hendel's. With its live music, exclusive wine list, and fine cuisine, Hendel's makes a lovely choice for an evening dining destination. Spanish Lake residents enjoy nearby bowling alleys, casinos, night clubs, jazz lounges, and movie theaters that keep any evening lively and any participant in good spirits.

Transportation

Everyday commuting and leisure travel pose no problem in Spanish Lake. Bellefontaine Road conveniently runs directly through the community, providing quick access the Interstate 270 and Highway 367. Stores, restaurants, auto shops, schools, and hospitals lie within close proximity of one another, and being located on the Metro bus line makes commuting even easier. Nonetheless, the best method of travel remains by car. Taxi service in St. Louis County is best arranged by reservation or phone as needed.
