Restaurants

Orlando's famous Colonial Drive passes directly through Southeast. This main road is lined with a variety of businesses, shops, and restaurants. In Southeast, you can choose from a variety of pizza places, the popular Rincon Latino, and local hotspot Old Cuban Café. Near the intersection of North Alafaya Trail and Highway 408, Waterford Lakes Town Center isn't just a terrific shopping destination -- it is filled with terrific restaurants, as well. Some terrific destinations include Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurants, Keke's Breakfast Café, Sweet! By Holly, and several more.

If you head toward UCF, you'll discover a variety of restaurants, many fast-food and catering to the large student population, but there are some hidden gems, as well. Bento Café, for example, offers sushi and large selection of craft beer. After dinner, head down to CaddyShanks Interactive Sports Pub, where you can enjoy video game consoles, pool tables, more than 25 HDTVs, golf simulators, and virtual reality gaming. For even more nighttime options, head to Downtown Orlando. The city features lively places like the Independent Bar. This multi-level nightclub provides three full-service bars, two dance floors, and sidewalk seating for those who need a break from the excitement. Friends come to mingle and network or explore the new sounds from live local bands.

History

In the early 1840s, Aaron Jemigan – a prominent cattleman – acquired the land in the area and named it Jemigan. Conflicting stories exist on how the city actually got the name of Orlando, but Jemigan was changed to Orlando in 1857. The land was mostly swamps until 1875 during the population explosion after the Civil war. Orlando has approximately 256,000 residents.

The history of Southeast is closely tied to UCF, which was established in 1963. As the largest university in the country, UCF enrolls roughly 63,000 students. The school began as Florida Technological University, designed to provide a workforce for nearby Kennedy Space Center. The university expanded its scope and was renamed the University of Central Florida in 1978. The UCF Knights compete in NCAA Division I at Bright House Networks Stadium, located near the north end of the campus.

When the 1,000 acres of land was purchased for the new university, the Board of Regents chose a remote area consisting of forest and farmland along Alafaya Trail. As the university grew, a small community developed around it. When Central Florida Research Park was established in 1978, now the largest research park in Florida and the fourth-largest in the country, more residents moved into the area.

Transportation

Southeast offers several Lynx bus stops, especially along Alafaya Trail. If you prefer to drive, East Colonial Drive will get you to Orlando, while Alafaya Trail will take you to UCF and the research park. Highway 528 extends east and west, providing easy access to the Space Coast beaches and Orlando International Airport.

Cost

Living in Southeast can be quite affordable, with a cost of living around one percent lower than the downtown average and two percent lower than the state. A one-bedroom apartment runs around $950 a month, and the price of a cost of beer is around $5. Gas is about four percent higher than the national average.

Shopping

From discount chains to high-end boutiques, you can find nearly everything you need in Southeast. Various shopping malls also lie throughout the region, with anchor chains such as Macy's and Neiman Marcus. Residents enjoy Waterford Lakes Town Center, an outdoor mall with popular retailers such as T.J. Maxx, Bed Bath & Beyond, Michael's, and Kohl's.

Along Colonial Drive, you'll find a variety of stores, including a La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery, At Home, and Big Lots. Head north on Alafaya Trail to the University Palms Shopping Center, which contains a Publix Supermarket, Pet Supplies Plus, and the UPS Store.

Take Colonial Drive into Northeast Orlando to Orlando Fashion Square, a large indoor mall anchored by Macy's, JCPenney, Dillard's, and Sears. Downtown Orlando provides a fantastic shopping experience, especially along Church Street and Orange Avenue.

Parks

The entire southeast section of Southeast consists of the Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park, a large park covering more than 9,000 acres. This beautiful natural area is ideal for hiking, bicycling, wildlife viewing, primitive camping, fishing, and horseback riding. Just east of the neighborhood, East Orange Park provides a playground, picnic pavilions, and basketball courts.

If you choose your apartment closer to UCF, you'll enjoy easy access to the University of Central Florida Arboretum. The arboretum covers 82 acres and offers tours, a community garden, and geocaching.
