Restaurants

Residents enjoy a wide-selection of restaurants in town, most of which sit along South Semoran Boulevard. Locals love dining at Pio Pio Cuisine for unbeatable Latin American food - the beef empanadas and the Spanish sausage in particular are known for making repeat customers out of first-timers. The green plantains and the fried rice with steak, chicken and shrimp are other menu superstars that come highly recommended. If you want to enjoy some cocktails with your meal, be sure to arrive before 8:00 p.m. in order to take advantage of the two for one drink special.

Sample terrific Thai food at Thai Island, serving up delicacies like drunken noodles and papaya salad. For those who love soup, try the exotic Tom Yum soup with chicken. For light nibbles before a night on the town, order up a plate of curry puffs, summer rolls or fish cakes. For an ideal finishing touch, order a cream-drenched Thai iced tea to wash it all down.

Seafood lovers won't want to miss the whimsically-named High Tide Harry's restaurant. The steamed shrimp, steamed blue crabs and shellfish bring the best of the surf to the table - and your tastebuds - try the seafood platter if you have trouble picking a favorite. This nautical establishment also runs food and drink specials on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. Insiders say that Martini Mondays are worth a visit - they include two-for-one top-shelf martinis, half off appetizers and nightly lotto drawings.

When you want to head out for an ice cold brew or cocktail, you'll have your pick of some fantastic South Semoran staples. A wide variety of craft beers await at Oblivion Taproom or Barley and Vine Biergarten, which serves craft beer on draft or in a bottle. While visiting, be sure to sit outside - weather permitting, of course - and challenge your friends to a game of Jenga, or simply relax by the fire pit. Rogue Pub acts as the local hangout for those that just want to kick back and unwind - you'll find regulars shooting a game of pool, or playing darts while enjoying an ice cold brewski.

History

As a neighborhood within the city of Orlando, South Semoran plays a role in its established history. Until the Europeans arrived in 1536, the only groups inhabiting the land were the Creek and Native American tribes; the next boom in population didn't occur until the Reconstruction Era. Shortly after, the city became incorporated and earned kudos for being one of Florida's main citrus industries. The population surged again in the 1920s, due to the Florida Land Boom - many neighborhoods, including South Semoran, were developed at this time.

Learn more about the area's history at Orange County Regional History Center museum. A visit allows curious history buffs to experience what Central Florida was like in its pre-Disney days, in addition to interesting traveling exhibits. Attend the annual Holiday at Heritage Square event in December and kick off the holiday season. If you're interested in a dose of fine art, experience the local arts scene, ranging from visual arts to performing arts, at CityArts Factory.

Transportation

Nearly 80 percent of residents drive their own vehicles in town - commuters can easily reach Orlando's city center via FL-408 within 20 minutes. Free street parking is available in the immediate South Semoran neighborhood, but be prepared to pay fees to park near Orlando's major attraction locations. Those who prefer public transit can jump aboard the Lynx bus system. If you need to take a cab, it wouldn't hurt to call ahead for a service or Uber unless you find yourself in the downtown area of Orlando, where cabs can be hailed in some busier areas. Residential sidewalks provide safe ways for bikers and walkers to move about, but pedestrians should stay away from busier streets due to heavy tourist traffic throughout the day.

Cost

South Semoran's cost of living is 4 percent less than the Orlando average and renters pay $749 per month to dwell in a one-bedroom residence. When you want to reach the city center via public transportation, a one-way trip on the Lynx bus costs $2. In order to fill your gas tank, expect to pay 4 percent higher than the national average. Enjoy a beer at a local pub for $9, or catch a happy hour special and pay half that price.

Shopping

Shoppers travel a mere 4 miles to reach the closest shopping mall, Orlando Fashion Square. The mall hosts department store shopping at Sears, Macy's and JCPenney, as well as smaller chain stores such as PacSun and The Limited. There, high-end shops such as Versace, TAG Heuer, Tiffany & Co. and Tommy Bahama along with department stories including Macy's and Bloomingdale's tempt shoppers with gorgeous displays and hot new trends in fashion. Middle scale chain stores such as Banana Republic and J. Crew also make the trip to this shopper-friendly property worthwhile. When you want to skip traditional chain store shopping, area boutiques have just what you're looking for. Zou Zou Boutique specializes in women's clothing and accessories. Another great boutique, Lauren Nicole, is located just 5 miles away and sells stylish clothing at reasonable prices. Shop around and find maxi dresses, party dresses, skirts, tanks and shorts. Clemons Produce showcases an Amish deli, jams, honey and locally-grown fruits and vegetables. Fresh 24 Produce Market serves as another excellent source for those looking to buy local ingredients for their meals. Most produce items are organic, and theprices won't drain your wallet. If you prefer supermarket-style shopping, Publix operates several stores in the area.

Parks

Enjoy the great outdoors at local parks surrounding the neighborhood. Barber Park houses free basketball courts, soccer fields and two covered playgrounds with soft floors - perfect for kids and those who want to get a little exercise. The property welcomes dogs and has a dog park for both large and small pooches. Residents enjoy rollerblading, jogging and strolling about the grounds while basking in the Florida sunshine. Set up a lakeside picnic and get some fresh air, or head out in the cooler months for the park's the annual Barber Park Fall Festival or Movie nights, typically held in November.

Residents also frequent Lake Eola Park where they can walk along the well-maintained path and take in the beautiful views of the lake, surrounded by ducks and swans, for free. On Sundays, visitors can catch the farmers market held directly on the property. The park also offers yoga classes and shoots off fireworks on certain holidays. Take a jog around the lake with your pooch or have a picnic with your family - just be sure the friendly waterfowl don't make off with your sandwiches. Be sure to attend the annual Fall Fiesta typically held the first weekend in November.
