You find the neighborhood of Outer Sunnyvale located in Sunnyvale, California, in the north of Santa Clara county, bisected by Highway 101 and abutted on one side by the San Francisco Bay. One of the major cities that make up the widely famed Silicon Valley, many tech companies flock to this part of California, including Yahoo, and several aerospace and defense companies, such as the major facility for international brand Lockheed Martin. Another aspect of Sunnyvale that makes this neighborhood unique remains a single, unified department of public safety, where all personnel train, including firefighters, police and EMTs.

Restaurants

Outer Sunnyvale — in fact, all of the City of Sunnyvale — features an eclectic mix of cuisine, both international and local. The nightlife options available in this neighborhood can be found mostly in the center of town, rather than in this neighborhood. To find the most abundant dining options in the city, you’ need to head along Highway Route 82, stretching from Sunnyvale all the way to San Francisco.

For a taste of new American cuisine in a fine dining environment, the Lion and Compass successfully combines the two. To treat yourself, try the grilled New Zealand rack of lamb, served with a pesto marinade, sauteed kale, fresh and mild goat cheese, cheese polenta and a sherry wine glaze.

Local favorite, Dish n Dash combines Middle Eastern cuisine of family, age-old recipes, with the concept of fresh, healthy eating. Utilizing low-carb wheat, homemade sauces and antioxidant ingredients, this eatery invites diners to choose their meal through a three-step process. First, choose your starch or salad, such as a wrap or rice, then pick your protein or veggies, such as chicken shawarma or falafel, and add toppings, such as pea sprouts and feta cheese, before finally adding a side dish of fava beans or lentil soup.

Head to Homi Japanese Ramen to sample reinterpreted-noodle and Asian cuisine, available for dine in, carry-out or delivery. For a classic taste of Asia, locals claim that you can’t go wrong with their House Special, served with three homemade meatballs, two fish tofu, half an egg, sliced pork, bean sprouts and green onions in a salt soup base.

The same applies to nightlife in Outer Sunnyvale as to its dining options: the neighborhood has limits, though you have no trouble accessing more options if you head out into the rest of the city. On Wildwood Avenue, Bogart’s Lounge and Tech Pub provides the nearest nightlife location when night falls and it’s time to relax with a drink, with free Wi-Fi and other amenities to boot. You’ find the nearest music venue at Shoreline Amphitheatre, a festival-sized outdoor music venue.

History

Originally settled in the 1770s by Spanish immigrants, Sunnyvale evolved over time from a wheat-growing area to one of the region’s most prolific sources of fruit. The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the forerunner of NASA, was established here in 1939 and, during World War II, the area shifted from agricultural to hi-tech industries, manufacturing equipment, engines and parts to fuel the war effort. Modern-day Sunnyvale forms part of Silicon Valley and hosts many hi-tech companies.

Visit two museums in Outer Sunnyvale: Moffett Field Historical Society Museum and the Chinese American Culture Center. While no real arts scene exists in the immediate area, downtown Sunnyvale and Highway Route 82 feature many art galleries and businesses. Look out for the Sunnyvale branch of the Art Institute of California, and the Gloria School of Music and Arts, and keep your eyes on downtown Sunnyvale for regular community events.

Transportation

Most of Outer Sunnyvale’s residents rely on their cars or bicycles to get around because, while road access provides plenty of ways to travel around and outside the neighborhood, public transport options remain limited and the neighborhood does not favor pedestrians.

Outer Sunnyvale and Sunnyvale proper sit at the crossroads of four major freeway and expressways, within direct freeway access to three major international airports and also to stations that service the Caltrain commuter rail, Amtrak, Valley Transportation Authority, Light Rail Service and Greyhound bus lines.

You can also make use of one of the many taxi services that operate near Outer Sunnyvale, each of which can be called to arrange a pickup. Uber does not operate within the neighborhood, though it does in nearby San Francisco. Though you find Outer Sunnyvale largely unwalkable, errands can be completed on foot within the downtown area of Sunnyvale. Locals enjoy biking in Outer Sunnyvale because the area has extensive biking infrastructure for bikers.

Cost

While the amenities, attractiveness and small-town feel make living in Outer Sunnyvale attractive, you need to prepare yourself for a relatively high cost of living that sits roughly 12 percent above the average to live in the San Francisco area. Expect to pay a median rental cost for a one-bedroom apartment of around $2,327, while travelling via public transport into San Francisco costs you upwards of $13. The price for a typical pint of beer runs you about $9.75, while the price per gallon of gasoline hovers around 11 percent higher than the national average.

Shopping

As you might expect, most of the specialty shopping options in Sunnyvale relate to computers, and tech-related fields and needs.

If you have an interest in older or outdated technology, head to Weird Stuff in Outer Sunnyvale to find a repository for all of your needs. The Sunnyvale location spans across a large warehouse, open to the public and marketing complete computer systems, laptops, software, peripherals or cables.

Residents find most of the non-computer related shopping options around the downtown area of Sunnyvale. Beyond the expected chain stores, such as Target or Macy’s, watch out for unique gems such as Chocolatier Desiree, a boutique specializing in imported Belgian chocolates, chocolate sculptures and gift baskets.

Take your pick from several specialty grocery stores in Outer Sunnyvale, such as New Wing Yuan Market, as well as major chains closer to the downtown area, including Safeway and Trader Joes. You find the Sunnyvale Farmers Market located beyond Outer Sunnyvale in downtown, operating every Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. all year-round.

Parks

To enjoy the outdoors in Outer Sunnyvale, head to Stevens Creek Trail, a paved, multi-use path for walkers and joggers along the Steven Creek. The Twin Creeks Sports Complex meanwhile includes an athletic facility for boys’ and girls’ softball, football, and soccer league play and tournaments, while the Stevens Creek Shoreline Nature Study area almost exclusively comprises wild land that allows for the viewing of wildlife in a natural environment.

For families and children, the 70-plus acres of Sunnyvale Baylands Park abutting San Francisco Bay features playgrounds for the kids, trails for walkers and joggers, and a wetlands preserve. All pets must remain leashed at all times unless otherwise noted in Outer Sunnyvale’s parks. Families with smaller children enjoy the Baylands Park, with several playground spaces for toddlers and younger children, while exercise-minded visitors enjoy the trails in the park that connect up and lead to parks in nearby Mountain View, running along the edge of the San Francisco Bay.
