Chain restaurant Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Duncanville starts off your culinary journey with crispy fried alligator served with familiar potato sticks and Creole sauce on the side. The main dish follows: Costa Rican Tilapia Lafayette. This is tilapia with lump crab and shrimp in a beurre sauce. Have three times the fun with the dessert trio. It mixes banana pudding and creme brulee with sweet-potato pecan pie. Wash all that down with a drink called the swamp thing, if you dare. For dining outside of Southern restaurant chains, consider Luci's Chicken-n-Rice in De Soto. With only one other store in Arlington, the owners intend to keep things small. The chicken and fish dinners have big flavor. Tender and juicy, they pair well with different rice dishes on the menu, fried rice and plain rice among them. Side dishes include fried okra and stuffed jalapenos. A convenient drive-thru window makes this restaurant the perfect place to pick up a quick and inexpensive dinner for the family. Christopher's Smokehouse BBQ in Cedar Hill is not for the gastronomically timid. Choose from either whole smoked chicken or beef brisket by the 1/2 pound on the build-your-own menu. Buy a sweet-potato pie either by the slice or whole. Swallow down all that food with Southern sweet tea. When you enter, you'll see the wood smokers going, and you might encounter Christopher himself. With juicy brisket smoked to perfection and peach cobbler topped with Blue Bell ice cream, give him a pat on the back. For pretty drinks and live jazz music, spend your evening at Legends Bar and Grill in Duncanville. Be sure to get there early so that you can belt out a tune if you've got the singing chops. Karaoke each Wednesday night keeps the audience entertained. The great atmosphere in the bar allows you to lose your inhibitions and sing. If you get hungry, they've got a decent soul food restaurant, with to-die-for hot wings.

"Best of Southwest" refers to four separate municipalities with similar demographics joining together for the enhancement of the region. These municipalities include Cedar Hill, De Soto, Duncanville and Lancaster, with several other associate cities. This group of neighborhoods in the Dallas-Fort Worth area came about when the chamber of commerce wanted to form a partnership for the economic development of the area. The chamber of commerce in each city holds various galas and events to highlight the value of its specific neighborhood. For example, the Duncanville Chamber of Commerce holds an annual Taste of Duncanville event. Additionally, the duncanSWITCH Street Market occurs each Saturday with food vendors and fun. Enjoy a sunset safari gala courtesy of the De Soto Chamber of Commerce. This event, held at the Clarion in town, seeks to raise funds for the town while celebrating the successes of the chamber.

Easily accessible off Interstate 30 and 35E, these four neighborhoods cover a lot of area. Cars, the main mode of transportation, make passage easy, but you can hail a cab, or dial up Uber in a pinch. Most sections in this exceptionally livable are safe for walking, but exercise caution at night. Parking is free in most places, excluding University of Texas' southwestern campus. The Trinity Trails in Fort Worth weave around the area, in addition to other bike-friendly paths in town.

It costs more to live in this large stretch of Dallas than it does on average in the rest of Texas. Getting to the city center via DART cost $5 for all-day service. Rent averages about $860 for a one-bedroom apartment. Beer at Legends or Real Time averages about $4, and gas prices run about 12 percent below the national average cost.

Southwest Dallas has centralized shopping at the Southwest Center Mall. Anchor stores include Macy's and Sears, while smaller shops include Lids, Champs Sports, and Foot Action. The food court includes an Aunt Ruby's, Mr. Pretzel, and Lucy's Kitchen. Southwest Center Mall opened in 1975 as the Red Bird Mall. The name was changed in 1997. Distinct Elegance Bridal Boutique has been in the Cedar Hill community for quite some time. This accommodating boutique sells a large selection of gorgeous gowns. The unique Ben Franklin Apothecary in downtown Duncanville hearkens back to the days of old. Order a sandwich at the deli or purchase some sweets at the candy counter. Let the soda jerk make you a malted drink. Sing and dance along with the Elvis impersonator. Shop at the General Store. With its full-line pharmacy, quilting and sewing center, and unique gifts, this truly is a Texas treasure -- the store won the Texas Treasure Business Award by the Texas Historical Commission in 2014. Lovin Oven Bakery in Lancaster makes outstanding special-occasion cakes for its customers. Trust it to turn an ordinary stack of cupcakes into a giant roller skate for a tween's birthday party. Its staff can even make a moist German chocolate cake just like mom's version. Customers declare that Southern classics such as hummingbird and Seven Up cake taste better than any in the entire southwest metroplex. And their wedding cakes are award-winning, winning the Wedding Wire Couples' Choice Award three years in a row. When it comes to groceries, southwest Texans have several choices. Sim's Drive-in Grocery used to be a drive-in diner but now sells groceries out of their unique location on Houston Street in Cedar Hill. Prepare to pay a little more at the upscale grocer Tom Thumb on Wheatland Road in Duncanville. Although billed as a farmer's market, Sprouts in Cedar Hill is a grocery store, but with an impressive display of organic and local fruits and vegetables. The Southwest Farmer's Market in Garland stands as the only traditional outdoor produce grocer in the area, excluding the big gathering in downtown Dallas. It has everything, including beauty products and specialty oils.

Cedar Ridge State Park along with Cedar Ridge Preserve provide great places for residents to relax near Duncanville. The Duncanville Recreation Center on James Collins Boulevard houses an indoor track as well as a gymnasium room for exercise during either grueling heat waves or the occasional snow falls. The children's park on South Alexander Avenue in Duncanville has play structures with wood chips on the ground for safety. Joe Pool Lake in Duncanville ups the stakes and makes this area even more attractive to tourists. Its expansion made both fishing and birding possible. No wonder Duncanville earned the title of Main Street City. The Tails N' Trails dog park in Arlington has 5.7 acres of fun for dogs to roam. The park provides free usage for residents and welcomes both big and small dogs, although in separate areas.
