Restaurants

For some Indian/Pakistani food bursting with spice and flavor try Zareen's on Plymouth Street. Locals consider the mango lassi here to be the best in the Bay Area, as is the chicken tikka masala. The staff is friendly and very courteous and work to make the food affordable to keep people coming back. It can be easy to become a regular here. At peak meal times, however, it may be better to call ahead, as the restaurant can get pretty busy.

For a one of a kind sushi experience check out Kappo Nami Nami on Castro Street. Locals love the authenticity of this Japanese food joint and consider it to be one of Mountain Views best kept secrets. People love coming here for the sashimi, as well as the vegetable pots and the ponzu. For dinner you can't go wrong coming with Soju Flights for a nice paring.

In the evening check out Opal Nightclub for a dance club that showcases all of the local flavor and fun. This exciting establishment opened in Mountain View in 2014, and since then has been the talk of the city. The club has become a melting pot, people from all walks of life come here to relax and have fun dancing the night away. Locals rave about the reasonably priced drinks, pleasant staff, amazing DJs and nice seating areas to kick back and relax. Be sure to stop by here on the weekend for an amazing night.

History

Mountain View had humble beginnings as a stage coach stopover for travelers going between San Jose and San Francisco. Citizens spent their time between farming and establishing trade networks until the city was incorporated in 1902. In 1904, Pacific Press moved into the city and become the first of many large companies to move into the area. The technological boom in the Silicon Valley saw many huge companies like Google emerge in the area towards the end of the 20th century.

Neighborhoods in the area have grown to meet the needs of development. Today many residents work for Google or other tech companies in the area. To learn more about the history of the area check out the Los Altos History Museum on 51 N San Antonio Road.

Transportation

Thanks to ample public transit networks and multiple highway networks, citizens of Outer Mountain View/Los Altos use the neighborhood as a base camp to travel throughout the extent of the San Francisco Bay Area. Interstate 280 and Highway 101 provide quick transit for car commuters. Residents do not typically have issues finding parking in this neighborhood.

Residents enjoy being close to two major cities. Commuters to San Jose or San Francisco can take advantage of the CalTrain, which runs right into the heart of both cities from the Mountain View CalTrain Station on Evelyn Avenue. You can typically find a bus line to get you to your destination in Mountain View. Use Uber to get anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Residents enjoy the walking areas around Outer Mountain View/Los Altos. Bikers looking to make a quick trip downtown can take advantage of bike lanes in the area but should exercise caution on busy streets. Residents can take advantage of the bike paths throughout the city that connect Downtown to Outer Mountain View such as the Bay Trail.

Cost

There is a high cost of living throughout the Silicon Valley, with the Mountain View/Los Altos area being no exception. A one-bedroom apartment in this neighborhood costs on average $2,050. A beer in this city costs anywhere from $5 to $10. Gas prices are roughly 15 percent higher here than the national average, and a bus ride to downtown Mountain View will run you about $4.

Shopping

Locals heading to downtown Mountain View should check out Therapy. This quirky boutique sells just about every cute thing you didn't know you needed. The clever knickknacks will get you going from the minute you walk in the door, and by the time you've made a lap around the store and interacted with the friendly staff don't be surprised if you have picked up a few things. Find them open late on the weekends until 9:30 p.m.

For fantastic clothing, head to Boutique 4 on Castro Street. Two sisters own and operate this large scale boutique. Picking from some of the trendiest modern fashion options, they never to fail to impress locals. Frequenters come here most often for party dresses, purses, jewelry or sunglasses, but this little shop has much more.

Anyone interested in the cutting-edge of spirituality should check out the East West Bookstore in downtown Mountain View. This place has the unique books from the top spiritual authors, as well as plenty of knickknacks and goodies such as nut shakers, collectible crystals and crystal decor.

Locals buy most of their groceries at the nearby Safeway or Whole Foods in Los Altos. Folks looking for more specialty produce should check out the Mountain View Farmers Market, which runs year-round. It can be found Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on West Evelyn Drive. The market relocates to Bryant and California on 49er Home Game Sundays.

Parks

Check out Shoreline Park right next to Shoreline amphitheater on a sunny day. The family-friendly park has plenty of trails for folks who love to jog or hike. You can also rent paddle boats or kayaks. The park does not have an entrance fee. For a nice park to bring your dog, check out the nearby Shoreline Dog Park, which provides an off-leash area at no cost.
