Restaurants

Dining out in Mauldin tends toward the casual, with most eateries spread out along Butler Road or Main Street. Whether you crave Asian, Italian, or American food, you'll find something tasty without venturing too far from home.

Locals head to Moretti's Pizzeria and Bar on Butler Road for pizza and wings, either to eat in or take home. The owners come from New York and bring their pizza-making expertise to a region not always known for pizza. The bold sauce and tasty dough keep Mauldin residents coming back for more, and locals also praise the restaurant's hot wings and sandwiches, especially the Beef on Weck sandwich, with its slow-roasted beef, horseradish sauce, and caraway-topped roll.

The folks at The Turtle Shell on Main Street go out of their way to make every customer feel welcomed and appreciated. The down-home food includes perfectly cooked burgers and buffalo chicken sandwiches served on brioche buns as well as steaks, pastas, and salads on a menu diverse enough to keep everyone in the family happy. When you check out the cocktails and beer, big-screen TVs, and pool tables, you'll want to hang here all evening long.

While most people head a bit north to Greenville when looking for some nightlife, you can find some low-key choices close to home as well, including that friendly bar at the Turtle Shell. Stop in at the Pretty Pearl when you want to watch the big game in a relaxed atmosphere, or swing by the Mauldin Pub for a game of pool and some live music.

History

Mauldin began as a land grant town in the mid-18th century and got its name in 1820 when the state's Lieutenant Governor Mauldin was instrumental in bringing the railroad to the area. However, the city fundamentally disappeared after the Civil War when most of the men went off to fight and never returned. After World War II, the town was reinstated and began to grow again.

Residents of Mauldin can learn more about the area's history at the Confederate Museum in Greenville. Also nearby in downtown Greenville, folks from Mauldin and all over congregate every year for the annual St. Francis Fall for Greenville event, which presents local bands, food vendors and a beer garden as a community event.

Transportation

The city of Greenville's Greenlink Transit runs a bus route through Mauldin to connect it to downtown Greenville as well as to Simpsonville to the south. Buses offer free Wi-Fi, and while commuters wait, they can track the actual location of the bus in real time on their smartphones. While taxis don't operate in Mauldin, you may be able to get an Uber driver to come out from Greenville, and you also have several airport shuttle services at your disposal here.

Most residents of Mauldin use their own cars to get around. Interstates 385 and 184 run through Mauldin, connecting locals to Greenville, Atlanta, Columbus and Charlotte. You won't have trouble finding parking in this serene suburb. However, walking proves almost impossible for anything other than recreation here, and Mauldin also has no dedicated bike lanes for cyclists, though a few streets maintain bicycle-friendliness.

Cost

The cost of living in Mauldin runs about 6 percent below that of nearby Greenville. A one-bedroom apartment only costs about $698 per month, and you can grab a beer at a local bar for around $2 to $5. Hopping the bus to downtown Greenville costs you $1.50 each way. When you get ready to fill your gas tank, expect to pay 12 percent less than the national average price per gallon.

Shopping

Head to Haywood Mall in Greenville for your major shopping needs. Haywood Mall features Dillard's, Macy's, J.C. Penney, Belk and Sears for anchor stores, in addition to boutiques, such as Express, Sunglass Hut, J. Crew, Brookstone and Aéropostale. The Shops at Greenridge host a Best Buy, Dick's Sporting Goods and Lowe's.

Closer to home, you can save while adding top designer names to your closet at Deja Vu Consignments. Go to this shop to pick up a gently used Michael Kors or Gucci garment or handbag.

Check out Jeff Lynch for a local store that sells appliances, televisions, furniture and mattresses. Choose from your favorite national brands at a family owned store that represents a Greenville tradition of customer service and value.

Locals do their grocery shopping at Publix or a Wal-Mart Supercenter. While Mauldin doesn't host a farmers market of its own, the Greenville State Farmers Market opens its doors year-round, six days a week, with extra vendors coming in every Saturday.

Parks

Around the edges of Mauldin, you'll find family-friendly recreation choices to keep kids of all ages happy. Head to Sunset Park for your kids' Little League or AYSO games. Take your dog for a walk along the peaceful walking trails, and let the little ones have fun on the safe playground.

When you want a little more excitement, Frankie's Fun Park teems with activities. Play some laser tag, race around one of the three go-kart tracks, play a few rounds of miniature golf or whack at some balls in the batting cages. The huge arcade features games for all ages. Also nearby in Simpsonville, the Golden Park Family Recreation Center keeps the fun going with a bowling alley and roller skating rink.
