The Outer Greenville/Gantt neighborhood lies less than 10 miles south of downtown Greenville, which Forbes Magazine listed as one of America’s top 10 best downtowns. Landmarks in the neighborhood include the Donaldson Center Airport and Lake Conestee Nature Park, a major outdoor attraction for not only neighborhood locals but all of Greenville’s residents.

The park features over 400 acres of natural habitat, including wetlands, evergreen forest and 3 miles of riverfront along the Reedy River. The park remains a birders’ paradise, with sightings of over 190 bird species, prompting the National Audubon Society to designate it an Important Bird Area of Global Significance. A rich assortment of wildlife also calls the park home, including river otter, beaver, fox, and numerous species of reptiles and amphibians. Locals never tire of the park, which houses over 5 miles of trails, including boardwalks that wind over the river and through the wetlands.

Restaurants

Locals looking for a particularly tasty dinner drive to Greenville for seafood at Soby's or tapas at the Lazy Goat. At Soby's, you must try the she-crab soup, a cream-based soup with sherry and crab roe. Follow your soup with the best shrimp and grits in town, Soby's antebellum shrimp and grits, which include Congaree Milling Company hominy grits and Tennessee country sausage served with crusty bread. Stop by Lazy Goat for some incredibly tender and juicy lamb. Order the Moroccan lamb, a braised lamb shank served with warm pita, cucumber yogurt, and plantain chips. Locals love the much-raved-about toasted garlic shrimp served with blistered tomatoes, feta, ouzo, and arugula.

For nightlife, make your way to Wild Country Saloon & Nightlife. The bar serves ice-cold beer, hosts live music acts, and stays open late. Locals say the owners and staff make them feel right at home.

Craft beer lovers drive to the south side of Greenville for homemade brews at Thomas Creek Brewery, which serves up several IPAs, a stout, pilsner, lager, and red ale. This brewery closes on Sunday but opens at 9 a.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday. After your brew, stay in downtown Greenville to see a play at the Greenville Little Theater or the ballet at the Carolina Ballet Theater.

History

The area around Greenville, including Gantt, grew up from the late 1800s to the early 1900s when a number of cotton, grist and textile mills opened. Homes continued to be built throughout the 1900s and into the 2000s, resulting in a variety of architectural styles in the area.

Baseball fans can enjoy visiting Greenville’s Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum, set up in the former home of the baseball player. Interested in art? Take in works by famous artists at the Greenville County Museum of Art. For a good time every October, locals head to Fall for Greenville, a culinary festival with six stages of live entertainment in the streets of downtown Greenville.

Transportation

Locals drive around town for most outings and enjoy free parking lots at local retailers, as well as over 700 free on-street parking spaces in downtown Greenville. No dedicated bike lanes exist in the area, but bikers and walkers enjoy exercising on neighborhood streets or the trails of Lake Conestee Park.

Uber, Yellow Cab and Budget Cab serve the area, but you must call ahead to the taxi companies for a ride. For a cheaper option, locals can ride on Greenville’s public bus system, Greenlink. Residents heading out for interstate travel can be on I-185, which feeds into I-85, in less than 5 minutes.

Cost

The cost of living in the neighborhood sits at 15 percent lower than the cost of living in Greenville, with a one-bedroom apartment averaging $594 per month. The price of a beer at bars and restaurants runs about $4 for an import bottle. Getting around town remains affordable, as gas prices average 17 percent lower than the national average and a ride on Greenville’s public bus system, Greenlink, stands at only $1.50 one way.

Shopping

Shopping in the area consists of a number of specialty shops concentrated along Augusta Road, including consignment shops, home goods stores and clothing boutiques. For big chain store shopping, head into Greenville to the Haywood Mall.

Roots, a gardening shop, attracts locals with its unique home goods, house plants and garden supplies. The shop hosts Wine and Design events, which consist of workshops where locals enjoy a glass of wine while learning about gardening.

For upscale women’s apparel, local ladies head to Savvy. The boutique decks out local women in clothing, jewelry and shoes, including designer labels such as Wilt and Hoss. A friendly and helpful staff keeps locals coming back to Savvy.

For fresh veggies and a good time, locals make their way into downtown Greenville for the Saturday Market held Saturday Mornings from May to October. The farmers' market hosts not only tons of fresh, local food vendors but also live music and cooking demonstrations. For traditional grocery shopping, residents head to Ingles, which lies within the neighborhood.

Parks

In addition to Lake Conestee Park, residents enjoy having two smaller and centrally located parks within the neighborhood, Lakeside Park and Idlewide Park. Both parks include athletic fields and basketball courts. Lakeside Park also features a water park, picnic shelter, large green space, playground and volleyball sand pit.

The dog can join you at the parks, but be sure to use a leash to comply with Greenville’s leash law. The parks remain free of charge and open year round. Visitors must pay a small fee to enjoy the water park, which opens only during the summertime. These parks do not feature any annual events, but Lake Conestee Park hosts monthly nature walks and educational programs.
