Restaurants

Most restaurants in Tallmadge are scattered throughout the pie-shaped sections of town. You can find a mix of standard fast-food joints and family- and pub-style restaurants.

Just off the circle, Delanie's Grille serves up great bar-style food and so much more. This is where the locals go. Walk into a Cheers-like atmosphere with super-friendly staff who are quick to bring whatever you need. Try the otherworldly Samira's Bully Fries, or pick up some melt-in-your-mouth lobster bisque. Even the traditional burger comes highly recommended. Get special deals via Delanie's VIP text list, and hit the daily drink specials for half-off prices. The only thing that could make your great night out better is getting inexpensive craft beer, and Delanie's has that too.

For a far-from-traditional breakfast, head to Wally Waffle. Established in 1975, Wally Waffle treats each person to the most delectably fresh, made-from-scratch food all day. Munch heavenly waffles, light and crispy pancakes, eggs, grits, sausage, bacon and just about any other breakfast delight you can imagine. But don't ignore the amazing burgers, chili cheese fries and country-fried chicken you're sure to crave once you try it. Expect fairly reasonable prices and fast service from a friendly staff who keeps the food coming.

Nightlife in Tallmadge remains a bit tame, with only a few bars to choose from and little live music. Delanie's beer specials are inviting, and Sammie's Bar & Grill features friendly service, good beer and loud music into late-night hours. For live music, choose from nearby city pubs, such as Barley House in Cleveland or Baxter's Bar in Akron.

History

Founded in 1807 as part of the Western Reserve, Tallmadge underwent much of its development in the 1950s and 1960s. Open to the public once a month, The Old Town Hall and Museum and The Schenkenberger House Museums display some of the oldest remnants of Tallmadge's history.

Offering classes in painting, drawing, scrapbooking and floral design, the city's Recreation Department caters to both youth and adults. For a fee, anyone may participate, but members usually receive a discount.

Transportation

Engineered for easy access, Tallmadge is a breeze to navigate. Major highways lie just minutes away via the main roads, with free and plentiful public parking throughout the city. Locals typically drive their own vehicles around town, although several other transportation options are available. For only $1.25 per ride, the Akron metro bus serves the Tallmadge area nearly every hour from 8:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Taxis do not patrol the neighborhood, so call ahead or contact Uber if you need a lift.

Although Tallmadge has no bike lanes, locals use the roads or sidewalks. Use caution on main roads, especially in the Circle; they get congested during rush hour, and traffic patterns can be confusing, increasing the potential for accidents. Pleasant paved paths through neighborhoods, parks and the Circle make walking enjoyable.

Cost

The cost of living in Tallmadge keeps pace with nearby Cleveland. A one-bedroom apartment runs about $600 a month. Take the city bus to Cleveland for $5 one way. Get beer cheap at a mere three dollars, and fill up your gas tank with a smile; gas prices sit at about 4 percent below the national average.

Shopping

Locals rely on nearby Chapel Hill Mall or shops around Akron, but a few unique businesses within Tallmadge truly shine. Scattered throughout the area, each one has a distinctive flair. Abbey Ann's specializes in antiques and thrifty finds. If you yearn for yesteryear and like bargain hunting, Abbey Ann's answers the call. Find midcentury-modern pieces, orphaned table lamps, console TVs and more in an interesting, stuffed-to-the-gills environment. Be sure to haggle on the price to get a better deal; everything is negotiable.

For over 100 years, The Henry Bierce Company has made service to the community a priority. A dinosaur among big-box home improvement stores, Henry Bierce provides what those stores can't: years of experience to help you get the job done right. Wander back in time in this old-fashioned hardware store. Grab some lumber, tools for the garden, pavers, flower seeds and jars for canning, just for starters. While this is where grandma and grandpa used to shop, great deals, an excellent selection and expert advice can still be found at this one stop hardwood store.

Carol Martin's Salon Spa delivers more than just gorgeous hair and nails. Makeup artists on staff find perfect shades to complement your coloring, and massage therapists work wonders on tired muscles. Nothing beats the hot-rock therapy for a blissful, stress-free afternoon. Get a mini spa package for friends, and relax together.

Tallmadge's Giant Eagle and Acme provide solid grocery service, and Seven Grains Natural Market carries environmentally conscious products. Expect organic meats, fruits and veggies that are locally sourced and reasonably priced. The bulk food quality is very high too. For even more choices, the city of Tallmadge hosts a Farmer's Market on Thursdays from June through October. Local school traffic makes getting there difficult, and vendors run out quickly, so plan to get there when it opens at 4 p.m.

Parks

Tallmadge has several parks that serve various roles for the community, such as soccer fields, a hike and bike trail, party and picnic areas, and well-constructed playgrounds. The maintained surfaces of some trails make them easily accessible by walkers and wheelchairs. Except for the swimming lake, parks are free to the public. Dogs are welcome if they are leashed and picked up after.

Free summer concerts take place on the Circle lawn on Saturday nights during the second half of summer. Get comfortable in your favorite lawn chair, or bring a blanket to enjoy the open-air tunes. The city also sponsors Movies in the Park, a free movie night for families to share with the community. More exercise-oriented activities can be found throughout the Tallmadge calendar year, such as the Labor Day 5K and the Circle City Cycle Social.
