Living in Outer Cedar Park

  • Restaurants

Outer Cedar Park restaurants carry a wide variety of foods and environments, drawing in many visitors from the surrounding areas and even neighboring Austinites to enjoy fine dining. Rosa's Café has traditional Mexican dishes, such as the Taco Carbon Plate, along with other more trendy, gluten-friendly items to make sure that you don't need to throw out your diet when you order. Enjoy the handmade tortillas in particular. The restaurant also caters for events and parties.

At Yaghi's New York Pizzeria, delicious New York-style pizzas stone bake to ensure even heat and crusts that come out perfect every single time. Delicious alternatives include the gyro sandwiches and calzones, if the best New York-style pizza in the area isn't quite your cup of tea.

Evening entertainment in Cedar Park has quite a lot to offer, as well, because the city is far enough northwest from the city's center to attract its own style of nightlife. Warm locals and plenty of singing can be found at Spotlight Karaoke & Sports Bar, and keep an eye out for the poker nights and the big games — there's something for everyone.

  • History

Like many of Austin's smaller neighboring cities, pioneers settled in the Outer Cedar Park area previously populated by Native Americans. Officially named Cedar Park in 1887, the city grew while benefiting from its proximity to the much larger Austin and the traveled trade routes between Austin and more northern Texas cities.

No museums reside within Outer Cedar Park, but several music academies and visual arts galleries allow residents to keep the art scene in Cedar Park alive and well. Fiacco Art provides art lessons to the community and hosts events for guests willing to engage and learn, while Gemini School of Visual Arts and its talented students house many creative and inspiring works of art that are sure to make even seasoned gallery patrons think.

Performing arts and dance studios such as Center Stage host annual and seasonal recitals and performances open to the public, featuring many generations of dancers and artists.

  • Transportation

When it comes to transportation, Outer Cedar Park has its ups and downs. Austin's Capital Metro bus system doesn't reach far enough out to service the entire neighborhood, and requires a bit of a trip southeast to reach its outermost bus stops. Meanwhile, the regional CARTS bus service does reach into portions of Cedar Park, but many residents and visitors will find that depending on where they live in the city, an extra walk may be required to reach the nearest stop.

The city does host a few taxi companies, but a safer bet remains calling ahead to schedule a ride, since running into one by chance is unlikely. Uber continues to gain a foothold in the community.

Public parking is both available and cheap for many residents, with plenty of retail centers and satisfactory neighborhood parking. Drivers also benefit from close access to both Highway 183 and Tollway 183A, which run parallel through the area.

Because Outer Cedar Park covers the entirety of a community, view both walking and biking as definite possibilities, but exercise good judgment about the distances you're willing to travel on foot or on bicycle. A limited number of bike lanes and generally good sidewalks encourage both, but pedestrians and cyclists should plan ahead accordingly.

  • Cost

The cost of living in Outer Cedar Park gives residents only a small break from Austin's average by about 2 percent. Median rent for a one-bedroom residence doesn't break the bank, at a comfortable $895 per month. Public transportation drives the cost of living up just a bit, as multiple exchanges and even switches between CARTS vehicles and Capital Metro vehicles elevate the price anywhere between $5 to $10.

Gas prices tip in favor of those driving themselves around, saving approximately 9 percent off the national average. Entertainment options make sure that residents pick their own price. While local bars may price a beer at $2 to $3, more expensive venues price brews closer to $6

  • Shopping

A wide variety of shopping venues call Outer Cedar Park home, ranging from high-end stores and high-value chains to boutique shops and mom-and-pop stores. For meals at home, visit several grocery stores in Cedar Park, including HEB on Whitestone Boulevard and a Walmart Supercenter right across the street.

Check out Texas Farmers' Market at Lakeline, open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lakeline Mall behind Sears and Dillard's. Discover seasonal, locally grown produce and meats year-round, rain or shine, at this community gathering spot.

Complete Book & Media Supply stocks almost any book you could want, but the selection does not stop there. Peruse e-book sales and subscription services. If you cannot find an item, staff gladly searches for out-of-print titles. Ask about special events and author signings from local writers.

Family owned Cedar Park Jewelry provides custom design services for your jewelry needs. The store also sells, repairs and purchases your watches and jewelry. Family members try their hardest to keep the environment warm and welcoming. If you come into the store as a first-time buyer or a long-time lover of jewelry, staffers take care of you like they take care of their loved ones.

  • Parks

Several city parks entertain patrons looking for outdoor activities with the family, sports or just a romantic walk with a loved one. Wide-open recreational areas such as Buttercup Creek Natural Area, Park Place Park, or Heritage Park delight with grassy fields, shade trees, and occasional park benches and restrooms.

Brushy Creek Lake Park has a lake, play equipment, and a nearby disc golf course and bocce court. While a few amenities at Outer Cedar Park recreational facilities require a small fee, most remain free of charge, most parks welcome pets and all welcome children.

Cedar Park hosts certain annual and seasonal celebrations in some of their public spaces, while community organizations reserve them for other events as well. Exercise-oriented folks can enjoy playing basketball or jogging through some of the parks and on local trails in the area.
