Outer Aurora consists of the developments on the eastern edge of Aurora. When residents of this area look to the east, they find a never-ending vista of prairie land, while to the west, the Rocky Mountains sit on the horizon.

Outer Aurora's proximity to Buckley Air Force Base attracts many military families to the area, while others have settled here drawn by the area's affordable housing and closeness to Denver. While the western edge of Aurora actually borders Denver proper, Outer Aurora sits nearly 20 miles from downtown.

Aurora provides its residents with a handful of neighborhood parks as well as several large parks. On the eastern edge of the suburb, find the sprawling Great Plains Park, which features two playgrounds and several picnic shelters. However, its splash park is what draws a huge crowd. There, children can safely run through sprinklers and cool water features.

Outer Aurora dog lovers typically head to Cherry Creek State Park when they need to relax. Located on the south end of Aurora, Cherry Creek State Park features the largest off-leash doggy playground in the metro area, but before the canine fun can begin, visitors must pay a small daily fee or buy a state park's sticker.

Those willing to travel to Denver have their pick of fun summertime festivals, including the Denver Chalk Art Festival, the Great American Beer Festival and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival.

Festivals also happen during the fall and winter, including the Denver Zombie Pub Crawl around Halloween. Denver Zoo Lights, a display of holiday lights around the animals, takes place during the weeks leading up to Christmas.


For shopping, Outer Aurora residents visit the Southlands shopping center. Located on the intersection of the E-470 tollway and Smoky Hill Road, Southlands offers upscale shopping and dining. This outdoor shopping mall features pedestrian walkways and small streets, designed to look like small-town America. The shops include a range of chain shops as well as small local boutiques.

Outer Aurora shoppers find exciting styles for women at Mainstream Boutique, can design their own ceramics at Color Me Mine or can search for a new outfit at Tilly's World of Jeans and Tops.

For groceries, residents of outer Aurora shop at chains such as Albertsons and King Soopers, or those with a natural bent head to Sprouts Farmers Market or Whole Foods. In the summer, the Denver Farmers Market draws Outer Aurora locals into the heart of the city. However, smaller markets throughout the Aurora area supply the community with farm-fresh produce as well.


Living in Aurora costs less than the average cost of living in other parts of the Denver metro area. While an average one-bedroom apartment in Denver lists for about $1,020, the same apartment in Outer Aurora may set you back approximately $900 on average.

Taking public transit into Denver from Outer Aurora costs $4, but you can buy a daily pass for the buses and light rails for less than $7. During happy hour, less than $3 buys you a pint of beer, and regular prices start at $3 or $4 as well. If buying gas, expect a small 5 percent discount from the national average.


The streets of Outer Aurora are safe for walkers and bicyclists, but the sprawl of the area makes traveling exclusively by foot or bicycle a challenge. Public transit buses as well as an RTD light rail station on South Parker Road serve area residents, and cabs and Uber operate in the area as well. However, both cabs and Uber vehicles must be contacted via phone or app, as hailing a cab on the street can prove difficult.

The toll road E-470 affords easy access to the Denver International Airport or I-25. Interstate-70 runs through the area as well, bringing commuters into downtown Denver. Parking in Outer Aurora is free and plentiful. The residential streets have lots of room, and all of the businesses have parking lots.


In the late 1880s, Denver businessman Donald Fletcher named the area east of Denver "Fletcher" in honor of himself. Less than 15 years later, a bankrupt Fletcher fled the area, leaving locals holding a massive debt for water. Angry residents immediately changed the name of the area to Aurora, and the name has not changed since.

Aurora, one of the newest areas of Colorado, features countless residential developments. Many of the developments were erected during the 1970s and early 1980s, when the city was the fastest growing in the United States, and the developments in Outer Aurora tend to be the newest ones.

The Plains Conservation Center in Outer Aurora educates visitors about the ecology and history of this once grassland area. Denver students and locals also like to expand their horizons with regular visits to a range of museums focused on art, science and children's learning.


Outer Aurora has fabulous food for those who crave ethnic fare. If you prefer Asian flavors, jump over to Pho 888 Vietnamese Noodle and Grill for an authentic bowl of pho, or check out Thai Street Food. Offering only carry-out food with a few tables for lunch guests, this establishment brings Aurora residents gorgeous stir-fried rice noodles, pad thai, ginger chicken and coconut curries.

A-Town Pizza on Quincy Avenue features Neapolitan pizza baked in a wood-fired oven. The crispy and tender crust combine with the perfect sauce to lay the foundation for tons of wonderful toppings, while all pizzas arrive at your table 12 inches long, with olive oil and basil on request. The Home Run Pizza has chicken, kalamata olives, pancetta and roasted garlic. Order the Big Tex to try a heaping pile of oven-roasted chicken, jalapeños, honey barbecue sauce, cheddar cheese and red onions. The Missy comes with tomato sauce, garlic mozzarella, basil and olive oil as a beautifully simple pie that pleases even the finickiest pizza fans.

In the evening, the strip malls of Outer Aurora provide you with a range of drinking experiences, from sports bars and dive bars to hookah bars. At the Flavor of Havana, guests enjoy over 20 flavors of tobacco and hookah service as well as cocktails and cigars. Woody's Wings, known for having the best wings in Colorado, serves spicy wings and refreshing beer.

While clubs aren't common in the area, locals drive to Denver for their thumping music and dancing needs. Clubs, such as Beta and Milk, bring area night owls to the dance floor.
