Restaurants

Arden-Arcade residents find restaurants, clubs, music and nightlife right within the neighborhood, with a few eateries and bars on Auburn Boulevard. Whether you desire burgers, Asian fare or Greek, Arden provides an array of eating options.

For a taste of Mediterranean, go to Café Europa off Howe Avenue. This small café serves Greek staples like lamb gyro and falafel, but they differentiate themselves from the rest with their fresh ingredients and tasty tzatziki sauces. Make sure to order a side of the Greek fries topped with feta, lemon juice and oregano.

Skip’s Kitchen, located on the outskirts of Arden in the Carmichael neighborhood, provides customers with a typical diner experience, but ups the food level to make fantastic meals. Get the three-cheese burger, a bacon burger or a Western burger to satisfy a large appetite. Healthy eaters can choose a salad as well. Stick around to have ice cream sandwiches for dessert.

If you're craving sushi, visit the hole-in-the-wall Crazy Sushi for all-you-can-eat shushi and sake bombs. Stop in for the weekly specials, or just order the Jason roll or Crazy Horse roll for a fresh, zesty sushi experience. Vegetarians have a variety of veggie sushi options too, so fish-lovers and veggie-lovers can dine together.

Most locals who live in the outer sections come to the center, near Watt Avenue, to take advantage of everything Arden has to offer at night. Beer lovers in Arden-Arcade like to visit Capitol Beer and Tap Room to browse through the list of beers. Whether you prefer an IPA or a hard cider, you can find several labels. Sports fans come to Field House American Sports Pub off Hurley Way to watch the game and eat good pub grub. Order a beer, relax and play shuffleboard at this establishment.

For music, make it a point to visit On The Y to listen to local bands and sing karaoke into the wee hours of the morning. Though locals find most nightclubs in downtown Sacramento, Arden residents can go to T2 Nightclub and Lounge for a good time on a weekend night.

History

Initially referred to as the Rancho del Paso area, Arden-Arcade began as a part of a Mexican land grant deeded to John Sutter, who established Sutter’s Fort. In the early-20th century, Arden-Arcade became known for its horse breeding. Several farms that bred horses survived on the land until construction started on neighborhoods in the 1920s and '30s. Today, the neighborhood has a ditinct feel of being a blend of old and new.

Within Arden, residents visit the Discovery Museum Science and Space Center to learn about wildlife and planets. The Sacramento Children’s Museum in Rancho Cordova displays hands-on exhibits and houses playrooms. Southside Art Center gives art enthusiasts a chance to check out some new modern art. Other locals head to the Sacramento area for annual events like the Harvest Festival at Cal Expo.

Transportation

Most developers planned the suburbs of Sacramento to be spread out, and Arden-Arcade fits this mold. Due to the wide streets and a number of large neighborhoods, most residents count on driving to get to their destinations. Most don’t find parking to be a big problem, since most lots accommodate many cars. Others hop onto Interstate 80 and Highway 50 to get to the heart of Sacramento or travel elsewhere in the state.

The Sacramento Regional Transit District provides bus service to Arden-Arcade, and several lines pass through the neighborhood every day. Locals can hop on a bus on the main roads, like Watt Avenue, Hurley Way and Fulton Avenue. Americab, BC Cab and other companies serve the Arden area with cabs. Lyft and Uber operate in the area.

Certain parts of Arden-Arcade prove to be more walkable than others, but for the most part pedestrians stick to their neighborhoods and take a car out to get anywhere significant. Cyclists can ride the main roads fairly easily, but should take caution since the traffic piles up during rush hours.

Cost

Arden-Arcade, like the rest of Sacramento, has a higher cost of living than the national average. Most residents pay an average of around $710 to rent a one-bedroom apartment in Arden. Compared to the national price of gas, Arden locals spend about 2 percent more than most drivers in the U.S. An average beer in Arden costs about $3.50, though specials may make the price lower.

People who use public transit pay $2.50 for a one-way ticket on a Sacramento bus. Locals younger than 19 or older than 62 pay a discounted rate of $1.25. The bus service also offers daily passes for $6.

Shopping

Arden Fair Mall, the premier place to shop in Arden-Arcade, houses many retailers that supply the needs of Arden locals. The popular mall displays Macy's and Nordstrom for high-end clothes shopping, but also shows off Bare Escentuals, Forever 21, and other smaller shops. In addition to housing national chains, the mall also hosts local shops like Great Escape Games. The hobby shop helps customers find dozens of games, from board games to role-playing games. Bring some of your own games and play with friends or in a tournament in the back room.

Arden locals do their grocery shopping at a number of nationally known stores, like Safeway, Raley's, Whole Foods Market, and Trader Joe's. People with a sweet tooth love Capital Confections Chocolates & Gelato in outer Arden. The confectioners serve soft truffles and take orders for custom chocolates. Head to the Country Club Plaza for Arden's farmers market, aptly called Farmers Market. Open year-round, this market provides fresh produce, bread, nuts and flowers.

Parks

Many small parks dot Arden-Arcade’s landscape. The nearest large park, Del Paso Regional Park, features play areas, a sand volleyball court and jogging and equestrian trails. Enter for free and stick around to check out the nearby Discovery Museum. Take a dog along and get some exercise while jogging and exploring the natural habitat areas, including the wetlands.

Arden-Arcade residents that want a long day out at a major park travel west to William Land Regional Park, located just south of downtown. Locals take their children to Fairytale Town or to the zoo for some family entertainment. Have a picnic out at Land Park, and keep an eye on annual happenings, like charity walks and runs or Food Truck Mania outings.
