Restaurants

Old Town North has a nice variety of restaurants all within walking distance from any point in the neighborhood. No restaurant proves more popular with the locals than T.J. Stone's and its classic American fare along with a broad range of international wines and beers. Enjoy the stone fireplace or outdoor patio while enjoying Dogfish Head's 120 Minute IPA and munching on Gouda tater tots. The veggie burger also proves exceptionally tasty for those in search of lighter options.

For a bit of Old World fare, head to Royal Restaurant & Caterers on North Saint Asaph Street, where the hearty Greek-Italian food makes for a very popular Sunday brunch buffet. This small family-owned, service-oriented community spot serves great food at all times of the day. For lunch and dinner, make sure to try the salmon fillet sandwich while making ample stops to the fresh salad bar.

Don't miss out on the bangers and mash at Extra Perks Coffee Shop, the establishment responsible for satisfying the neighborhood's gourmet coffee and English breakfast needs.

In addition to the more laid-back, local atmosphere nightlife at T.J. Stone's, neighborhood residents also frequent Fin & Hoof Bar & Grill, located in the Sheraton Hotel, for a more sophisticated night out. Grab a seat on the patio on a nice summer evening and enjoy a cocktail.

History

Europeans first settled in Alexandria in 1695. In 1801, most of the city became a part of the new District of Columbia but was later returned to the state of Virginia in 1846. Almost 150 years later, with the opening of the King Street Metro Station in 1983, the area surrounding Old Town North saw a spurt of new hotel and office building development. The Alexandria Black History Museum, just two blocks to the west, educates visitors about the Civil Rights movement.

Transportation

Transportation within the neighborhood can easily be done on foot, as all corners of this small region remain well within reach. Despite a lack of bike lanes, the streets feel calm and safe for this mode of transport as well.

Getting to other neighborhoods within Alexandria is best done on the DASH bus system. Bus lines AT2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 all have stops throughout the neighborhood and transport passengers to stops throughout the city. One-way rides cost $1.60, but monthly passes can be bought for $40, proving a more economical option for frequent riders.

The Braddock Road Metro Station sits a short 15-minute walk or 10-minute bus ride to the west and connects Alexandria to Arlington and Washington, D.C. to the north. The blue and yellow metro lines that serve the station also run all the way through the District and into Maryland.

Cabs will be more prevalent to the south of Old Town North along King Street. Uber cabs remain a great option wherever you are, as they can pick you up at your exact location with a few clicks on your phone.

Drivers find that public parking options are widely available, and access to major roadways such as Highway 1 and I-95 prove quite convenient.

Cost

The convenience and general high livability of Old Town North come at a price. A one-bedroom apartment rents for $2,284 per month, a rate that stands a whopping 59 percent higher than the Alexandria average of $1,440.

Gas prices fall about 5 percent lower than national averages, while eating out will set you back $15 per entrée and $5 per beer. Many residents take advantage of happy hour specials to cut down on those numbers slightly.

Getting into the city center of Old Town can easily be done on foot, as it's the next neighborhood over. At worst, the $1.60 DASH bus fares will get you anywhere you need to go.

Shopping

Commercial shopping needs are best met along King Street in Old Town. Many home furnishing stores such as Ten Thousand Villages, Crate & Barrel, and the ultra-high-end Chinoiserie provide the ultimate in home comforts. High-value clothing stores such as the Twig Thrift Shop, LOFT, and the Gap Outlet also line this bustling street.

Small boutique shopping can be done back in Old Town North, where a few specialty stores have built strong relationships with the community. Check out Kim's Dress Design for alterations and tailoring and AlphaGraphics for custom-made businesses cards, posters, postcards and signs.

Residents benefit from two grocery stores in their small neighborhood: Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's. The Old Town Farmers Market lies only a mile to the south as well, providing community produce, meat, flowers, and baked goods shopping every Saturday morning.

Parks

Tide Lock Park and Oronoco Bay Park serve as the two main waterfront parks in Old Town North. Bike and walking paths along the river connect them, so nothing actually separates the two destinations, and both provide great spots for walks, picnics or just letting the kids and dogs run around for a bit.

Daingerfield Island borders the neighborhood's northern limits and serves as the perfect setting for picnics with its open grassy fields. You can also head to the sailing marina at the far end of the island to rent a bike for the day.

Montgomery Park, located right in the middle of the neighborhood, contains a handful of well-maintained tennis courts for those looking to stay active.

Activities of all kinds take place constantly at Alexandria's waterfront. Every December, the city hosts the Annual Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights at the Alexandria Marina, an event the locals show up in droves for each year.
