Restaurants

Residents looking to dine out for the evening have many options and cuisines to choose from. El Guanaco serves up authentic Mexican and Salvadorian recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The papusas, fish tacos, steak burritos and tamales make delectable meal choices. Save room for dessert, and order the tres leches cake. For traditional American food, locals head to Dixie Tracks Cafe. A few of the house favorites include the monster melt, jerk Philly and naughty waffles. With the ambiance of an old American diner, customers keep coming back for more. When you're craving authentic Italian food, head to La Cucina Veneziana for homemade meals. The intimate setting is perfect for a date night. Start off with the canederli meatballs for an appetizer. Regulars enjoy the veal marsala and burrata bruschetta. Have a cappuccino and a slice of tiramisu for dessert. The nightlife scene has a variety of options for those looking to enjoy a night out. Locals hang out at Big Dog Station and Rag Doll Bar, which are typical neighborhood bars where everybody knows your name. For all the beer lovers out there, try Funky Buddha Brewery for a wide selection of craft beers. While slugging down a cold one, participate in a game of bocce ball, giant Jenga or cornhole. Take a tour of the brewery, and appreciate what this lovely establishment has to offer. Residents also find Lips Florida full of entertainment. This performing arts and music venue runs shows and events on a regular basis. Expect the drag show to have you giggling the night away.

History

Before the hurricane of 1926, the neighborhood was called Floranada. After the devastating hurricane, the town had to file bankruptcy due to the immense destruction. When the town got back on its feet by 1929, it reincorporated as Oakland Park. A stable economy slowly emerged over the years, bringing more restaurants, shops and amenities to the area. Although no museums are located directly in Oakland Park, many lie just minutes away in Fort Lauderdale. The Bonnet House Museum and Gardens offers a rich history, fabulous wildlife and beautiful gardens. The Everglades Safari Park tour serves much of South Florida and provides a wonderful alligator show and an air boat ride. Several art fairs take place in Fort Lauderdale, including the Las Olas Art Fair held three times per year. Every October, Oakland Park hosts Oktoberfest, which includes live German music, authentic German beer and entertainment for the entire family.

Transportation

The majority of residents prefer to drive their own vehicles because of the easy access to FL-811, which connects Oakland Park to Fort Lauderdale, which is 4 miles away. Public parking is easily accessible, and parking fees are generally affordable. Locals who prefer to take public transportation utilize the Tri-Rail, which links Palm Beach, Broward County and Miami-Dade County. The Broward County Transit bus system also provides service in the area. Hailing a cab is a fairly easy task, and Uber also services the area. Many locals enjoy walking or biking to their destinations. Bike trails run through the neighborhood, and sidewalks are built into most streets, making biking and walking safe.

Cost

Living in Oakland Park costs 11 percent less than the average cost of living in Fort Lauderdale. A one-way ticket on the Tri-Rail costs $2.50, and bus fare on the Broward County Transit system costs $1.75. Taking public transit saves you money on gas, which is priced about 4 percent higher than the national average. Plan on spending an average of $856.15 per month to rent a one-bedroom apartment and $9 on a beer at a local bar.

Shopping

Oakland Park is home to chain stores such as Lowe's, Walgreens and Ross Dress For Less. If you prefer to shop at a high-end store, several lie just minutes away in Fort Lauderdale. Oakland Park does have a few consignment shops and specialty stores in the immediate neighborhood. Locals shop for deals at Impress for Less Clothing Outlet. This location has a boutique-like atmosphere and features clothing from top European designers. Find bracelets, bangles, earrings, necklaces and other accessories at reasonable prices. Others enjoy shopping at Couture Consign for used, vintage and consignment items. Customers can find a large designer purse section, unique hats, cute shoes and designer women's clothing for a fraction of the typical cost. For some awesome deals, head to Oakland Park Flea Market Mall to find clothing, tools and household items. Residents like to support local vendors at Lucky Food Farmers Market. The fruits and vegetables are always fresh and reasonably priced. They have a meat counter in the back and sell homemade empanadas for only $1.50 each. Living Green Fresh Market is another option for quality produce. They also sell freshly made smoothies and sandwiches. Publix and Albertsons are also located in the area to meet everyday grocery needs.

Parks

A couple of parks are located within the bounds of the Oakland Park area, but many residents travel just a bit outside of the neighborhood for parks with hiking, biking and jogging trails. Oakland Dog Bark is an awesome park to bring the pooch out for some exercise, with both small- and large-dog play areas. The well-maintained grounds make this dog park an excellent choice. For a family-friendly park that also allows dogs, head just outside of Oakland Park to Fort Lauderdale's Riverwalk Linear Park. Visitors enjoy a wonderful walk area surrounded by beautiful historical houses and boats that pass by. Every Sunday, enjoy free live music. Bands set up at each of the gazebos, and visitors dance and listen to the awesome tunes. The surrounding towns use this location for their annual fairs, and occasionally, traveling farmers markets set up shop at this versatile venue.
