Restaurants

Mostly casual eateries thrive in Nassau Bay. Several chain spots can be found, but the local gems attract a fair amount of patrons. Restaurant-goers may choose from a variety of cuisines such as Chinese, Thai, and Italian. The majority of the restaurants are near East Nasa Parkway. Enjoy the fresh and flavorful menu at Mediterraneo Market and Cafe on Upper Bay Road. This restaurant has authentic Mediterranean food at reasonable prices. Open for lunch and dinner, part of the reason customers continue to return to this restaurant is for the great service and great experience. For lunch, have an Italian sub or falafel pita wrap. Start off with the stuffed cabbage as an appetizer before dinner and follow up with a plate of lamb tagine. Create the stir-fry you desire at Akimi. This family-owned and -operated, Asian eatery allows customers to choose how your stir-fry is made and what ingredients are included. The same goes for sushi. If you don't feel creative enough to do so, regular menu options are available. Akimi opens it's doors for lunch and dinner. Cuisine of India provides Nassau Bay with unique and freshly made Indian dishes. Try the Khasi Ko Masu, a traditional Indian dish composed of goat with a Nepalese sauce, or order the stuffed eggplant. The menu contains vegetarian options as well as healthy, gluten-free selections. The nightlife in the area could be considered slow-paced. Most clubs and bars can be found outside of the area, closer to Interstate 45, which mean residents have to travel about 20 minutes for a good time. Scout Bar presents live bands and has a separate room with a DJ and dance floor. On Sundays, a live radio show records there and features local bands. The Paint Pub provides an alternative to the nightlife scene. Located within Nassau Bay, this venue has painting classes, and you can bring your own alcohol.

History

When cities surrounding Nassau Bay emerged, the space center was only in its beginning stages. Once it was built, a plan was implemented to develop the surrounding land. When this came about, Nassau Bay was established as an attempt to attract more people to the area. With cities such as Webster and Seabrook already well-established, Nassau Bay's 1970 incorporation came much later than the others. Most of the area was part of the 1776 ranch owned by Colonel Raymond Pearson. The Johnson Space Center is the main attraction in Nassau Bay. This establishment serves as the headquarters for NASA. Mission Control and the Astronaut Corps where astronauts are trained are located at the space center. The center opens to the public daily and hosts exhibits and tours.

Transportation

Though most residents drive, biking lanes run throughout the area, specifically on Nasa Parkway. Though no public transportation operates in the neighborhood, cab service and Uber can be arranged for those without vehicles. Public parking mostly has no fees and most destinations offer convenient, free parking. Interstate 45 lies about 10 miles west of the neighborhood so accessibility depends on location. The neighborhood has many sidewalks, making walking convenient for pedestrians.

Cost

The cost of living in Nassau Bay comes in lower than Houston's average cost of living, despite the higher incomes and cost of housing in the area. The median cost of a one-bedroom rental is around $860 per month, a little higher than the Houston average. The typical cost of beer at a local pub costs around $4. The cost of gas is the same as the national average.

Shopping

Baybrook Mall on I-45 hosts a vast array of boutiques, shops and department stores. People visit this mall for the many activities and dining options as well. Visit retailers such as H&M and Macy's, or visit smaller chains such as Garage and New Era. This mall serves as the major area of commerce, but other smaller shopping centers surround the area as well. Because Nassau Bay consists mostly of the Johnson Space Center, finding boutiques and stores would require traveling outside of the city limits. Located right on Space Center Boulevard, Adelaide's Boutique has clothing and accessories for the fashion-forward woman. This store has cute and trendy inventory for women seeking chic apparel. Choose a denim bomber to fight the brisk winds or a casual work dress. Adelaide's receives new clothing everyday. For great home accessories and furniture, visit Hidden Treasures Consignment shop. This thrift store has restored furniture and even select jewelry pieces. If you need a piece of furniture refurbished, they can take care of that for you as well. Local grocery options include Target, HEB and Randall's, none of which are within the city limits. The closest farmer's markets can be found in Kemah and Clear Lake. The Farmer's Market in Clear Lake on Marina Bay opens every Saturday, and visitors can browse vendors selling prepared goods and fresh produce.

Parks

Nassau Bay has four parks, all of which do not have fees. Howard L. Ward Park has a walking path, a gazebo and open recreational areas, great for large groups and families. Lake Nassau Park and Lake Nassau Pocket Park are adjacent to one another. Lake Nassau Park includes a baseball field and a basketball and tennis court. Both parks have open recreational areas, picnic tables and a dock for viewing wildlife. Swan Lagoon Park has a playground for kids and a basketball court. Sadly none of the parks are very dog-friendly and no annual events are held in them.
