Located about 100 miles north of Seattle, Happy Valley is one of Bellingham’s most wooded neighborhoods. Similar to other Washington communities, Happy Valley has underdeveloped pockets of land and access to parks, wetlands, forests, and meadows. It’s common to catch an owl, deer, or even a horse grazing in town. Along with natural beauty, Happy Valley is best known for bordering Western Washington University and students or faculty can walk to campus in under 15 minutes. Although the neighborhood is a popular location for student housing, Happy Valley also has a variety of affordable to upscale houses and apartments available for rent. With access to two commercial hubs and great schools, Happy Valley is also a popular spot for families. Downtown Bellingham is only a 10-minute drive away so residents have easy access to museums, theaters, live music venues, diverse restaurants, brewpubs, cafes, and more.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Property Ratings at Monterra Apartments
First off, the rent is insanely expensive considering the old appliances, loose outlets, water damage, bad paint job, terrible parking lot (also not guaranteed you'll have a spot), and dirty premises. Property management is extremely frustrating to work with, not helpful in most if not all situations, and maintenance takes forever to respond, let alone fix problems when they arise.

I have lived in these apartments for 7 years now. First I lived in a 2 bedroom apartment with two other people and then I moved into a 1 bedroom by myself. They are safe and spacious and management does a good job of keeping them in shape. The apartments are a little older and sometimes need repairs, but maintenance is prompt and thorough with taking care of those for you. I highly recommend holding out to get a third floor apartment - the basement level is dark and damp and the second level gets a lot of noise from neighbors. The only downsides are that laundry is coin operated and there is a communal laundry room for each apartment level, and they drastically increase rent ($100/month or more) every year.
