This event provides a huge tourism boost to the town with an August festival that shuts down the downtown area from vehicle traffic. Activities involve a local parade, crafts, music, games, vendors and lots and lots of food with peach flavoring or ingredients. There is also a 5K run for the sports types.

Another race occurs a bit later on Labor Day, the MOT Big Ball Marathon. This event helps out local charities, and it doesn't quite follow the traditional race approach. Instead, the marathon involves a baseball game with an oversized ball, and the game goes on for 24 hours, raising thousands of dollars for charity.

Finally, there is also the Hummer’s parade which is a big local joke, making fun of the Philadelphia Mummers event. In the Middletown their version is a satire on just about anyone or anything in the newspaper or celebrity news for the year.

There is also a good infrastructure of recreation locations around the town, including the Silver Lake Pool, the new Level Road Park, and Silver Lake Park.

The Appoquinimink School District is responsible for providing grade school education to residents of Middletown, with three high schools, two middle schools and four elementary facilities. The town is also served by three private schools. Two provide K through 8th grade education while the third is a private boarding school. Finally, Wilmington University is established in Middletown, providing a presence of higher education. Higher education is available from seven different institutions within a 30 mile radius of town.
