Matlacha (pronounced "MAT-la-shay") is Southwest Florida's most colorful coastal community, a tiny census-designated place in Lee County where hand-painted cottages line a working waterfront and art galleries share space with fishing docks along Pine Island Road. Daily life here runs on tides and sunsets rather than traffic and chain stores. The main drag is walkable for local errands, and Cape Coral to the east and Pine Island communities to the west are both reachable by car for broader shopping and employment.

The housing stock reflects the village's waterfront roots: beach bungalows, Mediterranean villas with terracotta roofs, and multi-colored mid-century ramblers, nearly all on the water. Built on fill material during the construction of the Matlacha Pass Bridge in 1926, the village grew into an arts and fishing community with an outsized personality for its population of fewer than 700 residents.
