Restaurants

Many chain and local restaurants lie within the Loretto neighborhood. Many sit near the Mandarian Corners Shopping Center. Claiming the taste buds of Jacksonville residents, Renna’s Pizza serves detectable New York style pizza. Grab a pizza by the slice, or order a specialty pizza. Some of the popular specialty pizzas include the white pizza or Renna’s Deluxe. If you prefer other Italian dishes, the restaurant also serves dishes such as chicken Parmigiana and manicotti. For another option in the Loretto area, check out Picasso’s. Serving specialties from St. Louis, Picasso’s focuses on providing the freshest dishes possible. Its chefs handpick all the ingredients and strive to use local produce and seafood as often as possible. Try the pan-roasted chicken, rosemary-encrusted pescado, or just get a Picasso signature pizza. If you like Japanese food, head over to Kan-Ki, a Japanese restaurant. Decorated with touches of elegant Japanese flair, this gem seems to transport you to another world that features artistically designed dishes. Try the grilled salmon teriyaki, Kazu spicy beef, or just dine on the restaurant's wide selection of sushi. Whatever meal you choose, just make sure to get a bottle of sake on the side.

History

Like much of the outer neighborhoods of Jacksonville, Loretto was not originally part of Jacksonville. It wasn’t until 1968, when Jacksonville and much of Duval County consolidated to form the current city of Jacksonville. Unfortunately, the area of Loretto doesn’t have a vibrant art scene; however, The Mandarian Museum and Historical Society sits near the neighborhood. At this museum, discover old Florida and explore a homestead. They even hold many different events throughout the year, such as yoga and lectures.

Transportation

Because most business sit on the outer edges of the neighborhood, cars serve as the main mode of transportation within Loretto. Luckily, businesses tend to provide their own parking at no charge to customers. Cars also serve as the best way to reach downtown or other parts of Jacksonville as the neighborhood fails to provide public transportation options. Thanks to a convenient location right next to Interstate 295 and San Jose Boulevard, traveling to other parts of the city proves easy. You won't be able to hail a cab from the curbside. Instead, contact a local cab company in advance to schedule a pickup, or use Uber as an alternative to get around Jacksonville. Again, few businesses sit within the center of the neighborhood, so few people walk or bike to businesses.

Cost

The cost of living in Loretto averages about the same as the rest of Jacksonville. Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the neighborhood costs an average of $736 per month. If you head down to a nearby bar with your friends, expect to pay about $3.50 for a domestic beer or $5 for an imported beer. Since no public transportation resides in the area, you’ll rely heavily on your car. When fueling up on gas in Loretto, residents find that the cost of gas runs about 1 percent more than the national average.

Shopping

Like dining options, most shops in the Loretto neighborhood sit to the west near the Mandarin Corners Shopping Center and San Jose Boulevard. Shops include home furnishing stores and large chain retailers. A little outside the neighborhood near Town Center Parkway, you find some high-end retailers, such as Louis Vuitton, Urban Outfitters, and Nordstrom. A gently used clothing store, Ms. Mulligan's Consignment Boutique allows residents to sell their name-brand clothes they no longer want as long as they are still in great condition. Customers get the benefit of buying stylish clothes for a fraction of the retail price. Walmart serves as the local grocery store to the area, but you can also find a Dollar General and a Walgreens when you just need to quickly top up. Most of the larger farmers markets lie closer to the city center. However, Ray Chicoski Produce serves as a mini-farmers market for the Loretto area and sells locally-grown fresh produce and handmade crafts from local artisans.

Parks

Despite lacking annual events or activates, the neighborhood still provides outdoor excitement. Located about three miles from Loretto, Mandarin Park provides lots of fun for no cost, and dogs are welcome. Take your kids and let them play on the play structure or learn at the interpretive nature center. Bring a picnic basket and enjoy a meal as you gaze at Julington Creek, and if you have a boat, the park has a boat ramp. Get some exercise as you stroll the winding trails, bird-watching, or gazing at the creek.
