North Collinwood – Cleveland, OH

North Collinwood is located along the shore of Lake Erie, roughly nine miles northeast of downtown Cleveland. This neighborhood is home to large lakefront parks, such as Wildwood Park, and beautiful water views. The Collinwood area (North Collinwood and neighboring South Collinwood) were once part of the Euclid Township, but was annexed by Cleveland in 1910. North Collinwood begins at the railroad tracks and extends to Lake Erie, with I-90 passing through the neighborhood. The historic Manhattan Beach area is part of the neighborhood and was once home to the Euclid Beach amusement park, which opened in 1895. The park was eventually lost due to a four-foot rise in the water level. If you aren't familiar with Collinwood, that might be because this terrific neighborhood has remained a bit under the radar. It was even named one of "America's Best Secret Neighborhoods" by Travel + Leisure Magazine in 2008. With historical bungalows along quiet, tree-lined streets, this area is quickly being discovered and apartments in North Collinwood are rapidly gaining in popularity.

One of the best things about North Collinwood is its mix of old and new restaurants and venues. Scotti's Italian Eatery has been offering patrons a taste of the old days and trip down memory lane for years. Pizza is the main event at this casual eatery, but they also offer homemade pasta dishes, calzones, and salads. An old-school feeling surrounds the venue, and a patio filled with flowers is the perfect place to sit back with a glass of Chianti. On East 185th Street, you'll find a laid-back Irish restaurant called Muldoon's Saloon and Eatery. Specials are always on the menu whether you're in the mood for 50 cent wings or Texas style barbecue for only three bucks. A party room perfect for festivities and a collection of domestic and imported beers make this place a good time for all. A colorful, quaint, and tangy spot for Caribbean grub, the sounds of steel drums fill the air at Callaloo Cafe. Callaloo, the national dish of Trinidad and Tobago, the owner's homeland, has a special dish to honor its roots. Callaloo's Steam Chick dinner features spinach, okra, and spicy bone-in chicken pieces with a hearty side of macaroni and cheese -- a true taste adventure. At night, Beachland is the hottest venue in town, offering a hip-yet-down-to-earth vibe.

History & Culture

North Collinwood was once part of Euclid, a town formed in 1809 and named for an ancient Greek mathematician known as the father of geometry. Euclid was incorporated in 1877, then unincorporated the following year, only to reincorporate in 1903. In 1930, it became a city, but Euclid didn't remain a city for long. Eventually, it was divided up between Cleveland and several surrounding cities. In the late 1800s, Euclid Beach Park was the place to go for summer vacation. Residents from all over Cleveland came to enjoy the roller coasters, beautiful swimming beach, and the Euclid Beach carousel. The carousel was saved and is now located at the Western Reserve Historical Society. The hand-carved horses have been fully restored (along with the entire carousel) and is housed in a glass pavilion. It is open to the public, with two rides included in the cost of admission. The Annual Waterloo Arts Festival is held each July and features innovative experiences for attendees, concerts, and the best in Cleveland food trucks.
