Temescal is one of Oakland’s oldest and trendiest neighborhoods, and it’s not hard to see why it charms so many people. Temescal blends the old and new with a mix of Craftsman and Mediterranean-style houses and newly built apartments and condos. The iconic Telegraph Avenue runs through the neighborhood, providing residents with the quirky atmosphere Oakland is known for along with longstanding staples and newer additions. This thoroughfare is filled with international eateries, street vendors, eccentric shops, art spaces, dive bars, fitness studios, and more. Just off of Telegraph Avenue, you’ll find the Temescal Alleys, a collection of businesses housed in converted horse stables. Here you’ll find everything from handcrafted jewelry to food trucks.
Along with its food and dining scene, Temescal is also known for its liveliness and excellent location. Festivals like the Temescal Street Fair are held throughout the year. Downtown Berkeley, Downtown Oakland, and the University of California Berkeley are just three miles away from the neighborhood. This pedestrian-friendly locale has multiple bus stops and a rail station along 40th Street, taking locals into Downtown Oakland in about 20 minutes.

Temescal has become very trendy in the last 10 years. It was always sort of behind Rockridge in desirability, but now is known for its hip shops and restaurants. The elementary school is still rated poorly, but slowly over time, is likely to improve. There's a great feeling of community and people looking out for each other here.
