Eastern Washington University is a historic fixture in the academic community of the Pacific Northwest, whose legacy of educational excellence predates Washington’s statehood. The main campus in Cheney serves as the nerve center for an operation that extends throughout the state, including degree programs as far off as the Puget Sound area. The relatively compact, triangular main campus features beautiful architecture and serves as the focal point of the community. The EWU campus sits very close to the center of Cheney, with Downtown only a couple of blocks to the southeast. The university is mostly surrounded by residential neighborhoods, with many affordable rentals within easy walking distance to both the school and the city center. The local dining and nightlife scene is limited, but popular favorites like Barrelhouse and Wild Bill’s are often filled with students on the weekends. For a change of scenery, the more metropolitan environment of Spokane is only about twenty minutes up the road, and the region’s sprawling nature preserves like Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge and Colville National Forest are ripe for exploration.
As of February 2026, the average apartment rent in Cheney, WA is $977 for a studio, $1,007 for one bedroom, $1,297 for two bedrooms, and $1,580 for three bedrooms. Apartment rent in Cheney has decreased by -0.6% in the past year.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
