Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi serves as the major academic hub of its South Texas namesake city. Perched on a small peninsula known as Ward Island, the campus is almost completely surrounded by water, creating a uniquely isolated environment for the students and faculty. Much of the school’s research capability is employed is studies related to the nearby bodies of water—in fact, the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies is specifically focused on issues impacting the aquatic environments of the region.
Of course, the university’s location near the gulf is also a popular source of off-hours recreation and entertainment. The local beaches are only a few minutes away, which means you’ll get to enjoy Texas’ most popular spring break destination year-round. Classic college bars like Black Monk Tavern serve up locally-caught seafood, while beachfront hangouts like The SandBar offer gorgeous views of the gulf that are best enjoyed with a cocktail in hand.
While the university’s waterfront location means that many of the closest rentals are quite pricey, the nearby neighborhoods are full of great apartments, condos, and houses to fit any budget.
As of July 2025, the average apartment rent in Corpus Christi, TX is $779 for a studio, $1,016 for one bedroom, $1,248 for two bedrooms, and $1,543 for three bedrooms. Apartment rent in Corpus Christi has increased by 0.2% in the past year.
