Western Carolina University is a relatively small, rural college nestled among the hills and valleys at the edge of Nantahala National Forest. The surrounding community of Cullowhee is very small and largely revolves around the university; in many ways, the town has more in common with an isolated resort community than a typical college town.
The off-campus options for food and drink are somewhat limited, but a few local favorites like Tuck’s Tap and Grille and The Point Coffee House see tons of regulars. Most of the commercial activity in the area can be found about fifteen minutes up the road in Sylva, and the eclectic urban offerings of Asheville are only an hour’s drive away.
The stunning natural landscape of the area makes it an excellent place for folks who love spending time outdoors, with hiking, camping, canoeing, and mountain biking among the favorite pastimes for students and non-students alike.
As of December 2025, the average apartment rent in Cullowhee, NC is $778 for one bedroom, $1,057 for two bedrooms, and $997 for three bedrooms. Apartment rent in Cullowhee has increased by 5.1% in the past year.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
