Forty-five minutes north of Downtown Detroit, Oakland University offers a charming campus environment in the suburbs of one of America’s most legendary cities. The arts community at OU is exceptional: On campus, the Meadow Brook Theatre is the largest non-profit professional theater in the state, and brings an eclectic roster of stage productions to the community throughout the year. The Meadow Brook Amphitheatre hosts a packed schedule of top-notch performers, ranging from symphony orchestras to stand-up comedians to contemporary national touring acts. The main campus is mostly surrounded by residential neighborhoods, with minimal commercial activity in the area. The Village of Rochester Hills shopping center on the northeast corner of campus is a popular open-air mall, surrounded by grocery stores, cafes, and specialty shops to provide a one-stop destination for everything from a loaf of bread to a fresh outfit to a new rock climbing harness. Rental houses and condos near the main campus tend to be more upscale, with more affordable apartments found a few blocks to the west.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
