Tracing its roots back to the 1830s, the University of New England has served the region as a four-year college since 1952. The university enrolls around 12,000 students, nearly half of whom are postgraduates or doctoral candidates. Primarily a liberal arts college, UNE is also well known for its various healthcare-related programs (including Maine’s only medical school) as well as its College of Graduate and Professional Studies. The Harold Alfond Forum’s sports facilities are the place to be when the Nor’easter hockey and basketball teams are playing at home. The university’s Biddeford campus enjoys an idyllic location on the southern coastline of Maine, overlooking the Saco River as it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The nearby parks and golf courses provide excellent opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. Portland is only about thirty minutes up the road, making it easy to take advantage of the historic city’s vast selection of restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and shops. Boston can be reached in under two hours, allowing you to hop down and spend a weekend in one of America’s signature cities anytime.
