Tucked away in the quiet community of Natchitoches, Northwestern State University of Louisiana is a historic facility that thoroughly embodies the spirit and personality of the region’s iconic culture. Originally established as a teachers’ college, NSU was the first institution in Louisiana to offer degrees in the fields of nursing and business education. The campus culture is steeped in unique legends and traditions, from the popular stories of a ghost roaming the Old Women’s Gym to the annual Lady of the Bracelet pageant.
Northwestern State’s campus sits about a mile south of Downtown Natchitoches, between Chaplin Lake and Sibley Lake. Overlooking Bayou Amulet, Front Street anchors a charming district lined with Louisiana’s famous Spanish-style architecture house a popular collective of restaurants, bars, art galleries, and specialty shops. The area between Downtown and the main campus is mostly residential, but a few local favorites like Magee’s Patio Café and Magnolia’s Diner are close enough for you to hop over for a bite between classes.
