Resulting from the merger of two Purdue University System facilities in 2016, the Hammond Campus of Purdue University Northwest was formerly known as Purdue University Calumet. The school originally opened as a Purdue extension center in 1946, and has since developed into an important contributor to Indiana’s academic community with multiple research centers affiliated with five of its colleges. PNW is also a major cultural center for the Hammond community, featuring public sculptures, a renowned art gallery, and an eclectic roster of theater productions on campus. The Hammond campus of Purdue Northwest sits in a most residential section of town, surrounded by neighborhoods and public parks. Rental homes, apartments, and condos nearby offer convenient walking access to a wide range of amenities: several major shopping centers are nearby, and Indianapolis Boulevard a few blocks west and Kennedy Avenue to the east are lined with great local restaurants and bars.
Longtime hotspots like House of Pizza and low-key favorites like Boulevard Lounge are perfect after-hours hangouts for students and non-students alike. When you’re craving a change of scenery, Chicago is just a forty minute drive to the north.
