Established in 1917, UAF is the flagship campus of the University of Alaska system. The university’s unique location has led to several specialized research programs and facilities that have earned worldwide renown, including the International Arctic Research Center, the Institute of Arctic Biology, and the Institute of Northern Engineering. While degree tracks pertaining to science and engineering enjoy a high profile, UAF also offers robust programs in business, government, and the arts. The Nanooks hockey team plays in the NCAA Division I, and home matches at the Carlson Center draw fans from all around the community. UAF’s hometown of Fairbanks is an isolated city of about 30,000 people, the largest city in the Alaskan interior. While the area surrounding the Alaska campus is mostly made up of residential neighborhoods, the city center near the Chena River offers a diverse selection of restaurants, bars, and specialty shops. The winters can be punishing here, but the fairly isolated location allows for virtually unlimited exploration of America’s last frontier.
