Alaska Pacific University, a private liberal arts school, was established in 1957 as Alaska Methodist University. While no longer affiliated with the United Methodist Church, it is still a private institution. APU is located next to the University of Alaska, about four miles southeast of Anchorage. APU offers eight master’s degree programs and a doctoral degree in psychology.
APU is located on 170 wooded acres near the Chugach Mountains. It’s a small university with roughly 500 students, and all students are required to live on campus for their first two academic years. If you want to move off-campus after the initial two years, nearby apartments are available to the east along Boniface Parkway, or to the northwest closer to Anchorage.
Students of APU enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle. Far North Bicentennial Park is next door to campus, providing hiking trails and ski areas. The Alaska Botanical Garden and the Alaska Zoo are also nearby. Many first-year students participate in Expedition Alaska, where they spend up to 18 days on the Yukon River. APU is famous for its Nordic ski team and has produced several Olympic skiers, including 2018 Olympic gold medalist Kikkan Randall – the first cross-country skier to ever win an Olympic gold medal for the US.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
