Jackson's trendiest neighborhood, the Fondren District, is also its arts district. This popular neighborhood is ideal -- it is near seven colleges and universities, including Millsaps College and Belhaven University, located on the southern edge of Fondren. Jackson State University is about four miles southwest, and Fondren is home to the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, home to the Jackson State Tigers football team.
Lefleur's Bluff State Park borders Fondren on its southeast side. This large park is home to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the Mississippi Children's Museum. This 305-acre park also offers fishing, boating, a nine-hole golf course, campgrounds, and hiking. Fondren offers a wide variety of festivals and events, from art festivals to craft beer festivals to the Madi Gras inspired Zippity Doo Dah Parade.
Fondren's downtown historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From 1855 until 1935, it was the location of the Mississippi Lunatic Asylum. Back then, the town was known as 'Sylum Heights. In 1935, most of the asylum was torn down and the name was changed to reflect that of the town founder, Richard Fondren. Fondren is considered Jackson's oldest suburban business district.
