Neighborhood

Middle East is a small neighborhood about two miles east of Downtown Baltimore and just over a mile north of Fell Point, giving residents easy access to some of the city’s best shopping, dining, and entertainment. The neighborhood also sits less than a mile from Patterson Park, one of the city’s most popular parks that hosts festivals and food trucks. Middle East is best known for being home to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and several medical facilities including Johns Hopkins Hospital. Brick buildings and row houses line the streets of Middle East with housing options available for a variety of budgets, but the area is known for its incredibly affordable rentals. Along with Baltimore’s signature rowhouses, the neighborhood features modern townhomes and newer apartment buildings.

Terrible maintenance

Along with my personal experience living in this apartment, negative reviews about this property are all accurate. For those who had positive experiences, I'm happy for them. However, there are far more complaints about this place than compliments and that is because of poor management. Constant issues with water, elevators, and cleaniness. I am very disappointed and would never recommend anyone to live here. I hope that property managers spend more money on maintenance of these basic needs rather than sub par free food and gifts for a handful of people.

I Used to Think This Was a Decent Place Until I Saw How They Treated My Friend

I used to believe this apartment complex was just another standard student housing option. Then I watched how they treated my friend, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy. She reported a clear policy violation—her roommates threw a disruptive party, security had to intervene. Instead of enforcing their own rules, management did absolutely nothing. Then, when she became the target of harassment for speaking up, management STILL did nothing. Worse? My friend has documented disabilities, and instead of accommodating her, they chose to ignore her official university paperwork and demand a fake “acceptance letter” that doesn’t even exist. When she asked for help after being harassed, their response? “Have you considered therapy?” Because why fix the problem when you can just gaslight the victim? If you’re an international student, have a disability, or just expect management to follow basic fairness standards—look elsewhere. This place isn’t just mismanaged. It’s a joke.

Live somewhere else.

My experience here has been increasingly disappointing. The mailroom is an absolute mess; my packages have been missing so many times that I've actually started to send my mail to my friend's apartment. There was a flood that set the fire alarm off twice the night before a major exam. We've found cockroaches in our apartment and it was not properly cleaned upon move-in. Maintenance does not respect privacy and will barge into apartments unannounced. Our dryer does not work properly. Management is unhelpful and condescending.

Property Manager at The Essential Johns Hopkins Affiliate Living, Responded To This Review

Hi, We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback, and we sincerely apologize for the challenges you’ve encountered. The concerns you mentioned regarding the mailroom, maintenance, cleanliness, and overall experience are not the standard we strive for, and we regret that your time here has been disappointing. We would love the opportunity to address these issues and improve your experience. Please reach out to us at info@theessentialjhu.com or call 410-246-8538 so we can work toward a resolution. Again, we’re sorry for the frustrations you’ve faced and appreciate the chance to make things right.

Unprofessional and disorganized

Every week there was a problem where the water, electricity, heating, trash chute, etc was unavailable and often would not be fixed for several days to weeks. Management will straight up lie to you and always overcharges. It takes several phone calls and emails to get the extra charges reversed (they are usually not available by phone). They also walk into apartments at any time without notice and try to steal items from residents. As for the apartment itself, it is old but ok, however it is quite noisy, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings when the nearby hotel has loud parties that go on well into the night. You will need noise cancelling headphones to sleep.

Property Manager at The Essential Johns Hopkins Affiliate Living, Responded To This Review

We sincerely regret that your experience at The Essential has not met your expectations. The issues you’ve described are concerning, and we appreciate you bringing them to our attention. Our team is committed to addressing maintenance concerns as quickly as possible, and we apologize if there were delays in resolving them. Regarding your concerns about charges and communication, we strive to be transparent and responsive, and we encourage you to reach out to us directly so we can review any outstanding issues. Additionally, we will be addressing the noise concerns with the nearby hotel to help ensure a more peaceful living environment. If there’s anything we can do to assist you further, please contact us at Info@theessentialjhu.com or 410-246-8538. We truly value your feedback and would appreciate the opportunity to make things right.

Loving The Essential

New management has done amazing things for 929/Essential. Everywhere I go things are being updated, renovated or simply enhanced. 929 had a name change and with it a bunch of new faces that seem determined to make this the best community in Baltimore - so far - they seem to be hitting the mark. Nice Job!

Property Manager at The Essential Johns Hopkins Affiliate Living, Responded To This Review

Thank you for your feedback! This review is from February, and we’re glad to hear you’ve noticed and appreciated the improvements under new management. We’re committed to continuing these efforts to make this the best community in Baltimore. Thank you for your kind words!

Wish I could give 0 stars

Loud, dirty, cheap construction and appliances, frequently issues with water, AC, and obtaining packages. Shady management practices.

Property Manager at The Essential Johns Hopkins Affiliate Living, Responded To This Review

Hello Reviewer, I'm responding on 04/01/2024 as a member of the new management and operations team at "The Essential". While we were not the operators of the former community "929" we always regret to hear that someone had an unpleasant experience. Anytime a resident is unhappy it reflects negative on the entire industry as well as tarnishes what should be the happiest times for a student. We welcome you to come to "The Essential" and meet with members of our team. We're taking the feedback you left for previous operators, and utilizing it to take preventative steps to help try and ensure our residents do not experience the issues you mentioned under prior management. We recognize this may be the same facility - but our team consists of the best and brightest - determined to take "Essential" steps to ensure you are always taken care of. On behalf of the team here, I wish you the best in your academic endevors. I hope that if you are in the area that you will stop by and say hello and allow us to show you the many changes we have underway. Best, BilliePaige Essential Resident Support

Safest, most convenient and best value for money option in the area

I've been living in 4 bed 2 bath apartment for past 1.5 years, and do plan to continue for next year. I am a PhD student at nearby JHU medical campus and I believe it is the safest, most convenient and best value for money option in the area for students/post docs/residents who work at JHU/JHH. The proximity to JHU/JHH is convenient, and the whole way to the apartments is patrolled and well-litten. There is 24h desk reception and mail service (with easy package drop off to be sent out too), so your amazon delivers will not be dropped in front of row house doors and possibly lost. I have never had either incoming or outcoming mail lost (I receive avg. of 2 packages and sent out avg. of 1 package per week). 929 building has good common areas, including large common room with an adjacent rooftop area; I hosted a welcome lunch for new students and co-hosted Thanksgiving for the folks who stayed for holidays in the building - and both times the apartment served great for us. I use these places to study late hours at times (along with some other). The gym is another thing which makes me plan to stay there - it is small, but has good treadmills and a wide selection of weights.

11/7/19
Extremely poor management

Decent building in close proximity to Johns Hopkins Hospital. I have been a long term resident (4+ years) and have been appalled by poor, inconsiderate management in the past several years. Absolutely would NOT recommend to incoming students at the School of Medicine, Public Health, or Nursing. I would recommend Jefferson Square instead, where management may have the slightest bit of reason. They have changed terms without notifying existing residents, making keeping a pet (which I have paid a monthly fee for) extremely unsafe.

Property Manager at The Essential Johns Hopkins Affiliate Living, Responded To This Review

Hello Reviewer, I'm responding on 04/01/2024 as a member of the new management and operations team at "The Essential". While we were not the operators of the former community "929" it always saddens me that someone has an unhappy housing experience. I appreciate that you were a member here for 4 years. Hopefully that means that the issues you experienced were related towards management specifically like you mentioned. Now that this facility is "The Essentially" with an entirely new management and operations team, I'm confident that we will be able to remedy the issues you've referenced. I'm proud to say our residents are already seeing a completely different experience. This community now featuers 24/7 monitored access via front desk attendant as well as securred access monitoring. Our community also features secured access entry. I welcome you to stop by and take a tour. We love our medical students and want all of them to see that we want the best possible experience for these "Essential" students. On behalf of the team here, I wish you the best in your academic endevors. I hope that if you are in the area that you will stop by and say hello and allow us to show you the many changes we have underway. Best, BilliePaige Essential Resident Support

Worst apartment experience

Apartment came dirty (food still here) and most appliances broken.

10/20/17
Bed bugs and mould

This place has bed bugs. When I brought this up with management (including photographic evidence of bed bug bites), they denied this was a problem and refused to give me my money back. There were also small areas of mould around poor-ventilated parts of the apartment. Again, denied to be a problem by management. The apartments are small for the amount you pay. (I rented a studio, but I hear even the 1-bed apartments are small). There are lots of much newer apartment complexes around Johns Hopkins, which are far better value for money and more importantly don't have bed bugs! If this review prevents one person from making the same mistake I made, it would have been worth it.

3/9/17
stay anywhere else but here

Stay anywhere else but here! - Apartments much smaller compared to other buildings; building overcharges for what it has to offer. Insulation/soundproofing so poor that you will also hear sirens/cars going by constantly. In fact, when there has been lots of rain, people have had water leak into their apartments. - Maintenance requests often take more than 3 weeks to complete, and even then are done incorrectly. The staff is just not trained to handle most of the maintenance issues, and the specialists they need to call often take weeks to come, even for basic things like the HVAC unit and the cross trainers. Their main goal is to close the maintenance request, regardless of whether the issue is resolved or not, so they can say they "handle" maintenance requests in a timely manner. The fact that you have to actually submit 4 or so requests to take care of an issue is not of importance to them. I can recall so many instances of maintenance issues off the top of my head. Recently, my "wooden floor" was actually peeling off, and their fix was to come "glue it." Once when the HVAC was loud, the maintenance man "stuck towels in it" to try to keep it from moving and making the noise it was making rather than fixing the issue. - Trash disposal areas are frequently backed up, workout equipment is constantly broken and inadequately maintained and repaired, and even the limited chairs/tables that were present on the 9th floor balcony are no longer there. There are also constant notices about water outages, internet lack of functionality, etc. Speaking of the wireless, it was so bad that they have had to switch providers, but even then the speed is very slow, especially during peak hours like evenings and weekends. - By and large, especially in the recent past, they tended to have staff members that were not only incompetent but also unprofessional and downright rude. Your apartment could be flooded or the HVAC unit could be broken, but if it was 330 pm, it was time for them to head out, and they could not be bothered to fix the issues. Overall, very disappointing living here. The only reason to stay is to be closer to the Hopkins campus if you work/study there, but even then there is so much hassle dealing with most of the staff that it's not worth the headache. In retrospect, should have just driven/biked/walked/ubered/whatever it took the 10 odd minutes from various other locations in the city offering significantly better and cheaper living arrangements.

Best apartment I have ever had

The amenities are perfect. The service has been beyond excellent. I feel very safe here, and I truly feel at home! It's an amazing place to come home to, after a long day of work.
