Lawrence Township dates back to 1697, when it was part of the Maidenhead Township. The name was changed in 1816 in honor of Captain James Lawrence, a hero of the War of 1812. The Anderson-Brearley Tavern, which dates back to 1758, is located on Main Street, as is the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church. While the church was built in 1764, the adjacent cemetery dates back to 1713.
