The city became incorporated in 1885 after a burst in population during the Reconstruction Era, and it became a big part of Florida's citrus industry. Many neighborhoods, including Kirkman South, developed after the Florida Land Boom in the 1920s, and World War II attracted several naval families. Now, the land hosts many theme parks that attract residents and tourists.
