Restaurants

A strip mall of shops and restaurants act as a buffer between the residences of Hudson Manor and Apache Blvd. Due to the small geographical size of Hudson Manor, the quantity of restaurants within the community is appropriately modest - that said, there are a few ethnic options, including two of the valley’s hidden gems.

Khai Hoan sits at the northeast corner of Hudson Manor; they serve up freshly-made Spring Rolls are so delicious that you'll be tempted to order several as your entire meal. The variety and quality of the Pho is unmatched in the area, and the affordable menu makes it a can’t-miss eating option.

Next to Khai Hoan is Haji Baba, which some consider to be the best Middle Eastern restaurant in Tempe, if not the greater Phoenix Metro Area. This hybrid business, family-owned since 1981, is part grocery store, part restaurant and all delicious. The kebabs are practically life-altering and the portions are huge for a very reasonable price.

The most famous brew house in Arizona resides less than a mile north of Hudson Manor. Four Peaks Brewery was established as a brew house, but their food brings as many people through their doors as their beers do. The nachos are listed as an appetizer, but locals say they're so delicious - and massive - that you might end up taking the rest of your meal to go. The white pizza and spinach artichoke dip combo will put a satisfied smile on your face that won’t wipe off with a napkin.

There are no bars in Hudson Manor, a "dry" state which reinforces its residential vibe. If you'd like to toss back a few, just hear east for a quick stroll to to Tempe Tavern. Established in 2010, this former dairy barn from 1918 might look small on the outside, but you’ll find it rather spacious on the inside, with live music acts performing most nights of the week. Located directly off of the Apache and McClintock light rail stop, patrons heading to a Diamondbacks or Suns game often hop off for a tasty brew before continuing their journey west.

History

Hudson Manor was the vision of developer Conrad Carslon. In the late 1940’s he began selling the idea of living in a brand new 2-bedroom home along Apache Blvd for $6,350. By 1949, what once looked like a field with a rail line running through it transformed into a residential community with the purpose of providing modest living tucked away from the big city.

As Tempe began to develop around Hudson manor, Mr. Carlon’s vision was preserved. Hudson Manor provides the same level of seclusion with access to amenities all around it to this day, if not at the original price tag. The neighborhood association regularly holds ice cream socials, pizza parties and various other events in Hudson Park to help strengthen the community and create a true “know your neighbor” environment.

Transportation

Residents of Hudson Manor rely primarily on their cars to get around town. That said, the light rail provides commuters with another viable choice. The Dorsey and McClintock light rail stops on Apache Blvd bookend Hudson Manor, providing two convenient options to hop on. Pick up Valley Metro Bus route 81 on McClintock Dr, which takes you north into Scottsdale or South into Chandler. Calling a local taxi company or using Uber are your best bets for cab service in the area, as you won't be able to hail one from the curb.

Cost

Living in Hudson Manor might set you back a bit more than other neighborhoods - there are no apartment options in the community, only single-family homes which rent for between $750 and $900 a month. Valley Metro fees are $2 for a one-way trip on either the light rail or the bus, and a draft beer will typically range between $4-$6. There's good news for your wallet at the gas pump too, you'll be able to fill up for roughly 15% less than the national average.

Shopping

There are no major shopping destinations inside of the Meyer Park area. The ease of accessing neighboring communities via car or public transportation makes obtaining necessities painless, however, and most shopping needs can be met within a five-minute commute.

Stay ahead of the fashion trends at Pitaya on Mill Avenue. This boutique haven will have you looking your best no matter the season and most importantly, it won’t set you back a small fortune. Make sure to have at least one free hand available when you walk in, because you’ll be leaving with at least one bag.

Cheese lovers can rejoice knowing that they are so close to the Milk 'n' More Store. The first natural cheese store in Arizona produced its first batch of blue and cheddar cheese in 2009 and they haven’t looked back. You’ll find a variety fresh cheeses made entirely from 100% Arizona grade A milk, salt and enzymes. While all of the cheeses are delicious, the cheese curds are worth the trip alone.

Residents can conveniently walk across Apache Blvd to pick up groceries at Food City, which has everything to fill your kitchen and is known for freshly made tortillas and particular ingredients for Mexican cuisines. If you're looking for great local produce, be sure to stop by the Tempe Farmer's Market - a brick-and-mortar produce and local goods purveyor that sells fruits, vegetables, and even raw milk.

Parks

Hudson Park sits on the southwest edge of the neighborhood and has a wide array of amenities. During the spring and summer months, the “splash pad” play area serves as a cheap and effective way to beat the heat. After a stressful week at work you can hear to the meditation garden to unwind and center your thoughts. There are no annual events at Hudson park, though the nearby Ramadas provide a great opportunity to host birthday parties or community gatherings.

Nearby parks like Tempe Beach Park host annual events throughout the year and is easily accessible via light rail. Typically these events are free and open to the public, however some annual concerts like the Tempe Music Festival have an entrance fee.
