Property Ratings at Hawthorne Towers Apartments
Beautiful backyard space with a lifeguard and pool, grills for tenants and parking. Management has been quick to respond to any requests/maintenance calls I've made, and I'm very happy to be living with so many wonderful neighbors. Will not be moving again any time soon, and love calling this place home.
If you have any standards for how you would like to live, run as fast and far away as you can from this building. The hallways perpetually smell like cigarettes, weed, and/or trash. The garage floods after 3 raindrops hit the ground, when there was management they did more harm than good, the heat hardly worked, the AC is non-existent but the absolute worst part is the tenants. The community in this building consists of the rudest and most entitled people I've ever encountered. They spend all day badgering and disrespecting the owner and other tenants. Good luck trying to get a package or let your guest in without being rudely questioned by another tenant. The owner has no business charging the rates in place when there are 0 amenities. I will gladly pay the same amount somewhere else for a new building, washer/dryer in unit, rooftop space, gym AND civilly acting neighbors. Save yourself the headache and go to one of the newer apartment buildings in the area. I am so glad I only signed a 1 year lease, because I am absolutely fleeing the property once it ends.
I have lived at Hawthorne Towers for 4 years. The apartments are very spacious with lots of closet space. The property manager handles requests and maintenance in a timely manner. If it's something as simple as a lightbulb in the bathroom or needing to replace the refrigerator, the property manager handled it in a timely manner. Hawthorne Towers has a lovely pool and is situated in a park-like setting. It's a great place to live
"Yes, Hawthorne Towers is an "elderly" (vintage) building. It is both part of its charm as well as its challenges. There will always be need for repairs or upgrades to infrastructure, equipment, fixtures of any building. This was true even before Rockledge LLC took ownership / management of the building I call home. If everyone is being honest and sincere -- yes, there is room for improvement -- and the need for listening and learning on "both sides of the aisle" as the political saying goes. I cannot speak for other residents and their individual needs, but the upgrades that have been made in the common areas in less than one year have been surprising and welcome: new furniture and upgrade of the lobby decor; new lighting fixtures and furniture, carpet cleaning and painting in the common areas of each floor; new washing machines and dryers in the laundry room; upgraded barbecue / picnic area; parking garage repair; indoor / outdoor pest control; improved messaging and updates on building news or issues. The on-site staff have been courteous and professional with me. Yes, like most things in life -- it seems to be a work-in-progress.
All of these sparkling reviews are full of lies. The building lobby looks like the Apple Store, but other than that, there are major structural issues. All of the renovations to the building have been cosmetic. On Sundays, the garbage is not tended to and by Monday morning, the floors all have that garbage smell. Currently, in mid February, we have no working heat. Management makes up excuses and gas lights the tenants on a daily basis. Not worth the money they are charging for these apartments. My girlfriend and I would love to move out of this building, but the rental market is insane right now. Rockledge is a joke.
I would recommend the apartments at Hawthorne Towers. They are nice size apartments in a good location, overall nice neighbors. The staff at Hawthorne Towers is very friendly and hardworking. The new property manager has only been here a few months, but she is very competent and is doing an excellent job. The new management has been here for less than a year and the changes are significant: brand new lobby, renovated apartments, renovated heating/cooling equipment, new laundry, new outdoor grills. There are always some things to be tweaked (as in almost every building), but the updates so far have
I have a spacious one-bedroom with great natural light and four closets; rent is reasonable by Montclair standards and a rent-control ordinance limits increases. The previous landlord did not upgrade the heat/AC system nor fix the chronic roof leaks, but we did have doormen. We were the last rental in Montclair with that wonderful amenity, which the new landlord eliminated, kicking off the undying enmity of some tenants. There have been some issues since the change of ownership- like some AC units not being fixed promptly, issues with pool maintenance last summer- which may have been one-offs; time will tell. It has always been an especially friendly building, in part due to having a pool and a grassy outdoor space where people can socialize. The common areas are now cleaner and the laundry room has new machines. Overall this remains a very nice place to live.
I recently moved to Montclair and looked at several different buildings and multifamily properties. Hawthorne Tower had the perfect combination of safety and style. The building is clean and location is close to everything downtown. I've recommended it to a few people looking to move to the area. Keep up the great work!
I moved into this building at the beginning of 2023 and I’m really enjoying my apartment. It’s in a perfect spot of Montclair just a stone throw away from all the shops and restaurants and close to public transportation into NYC. I moved into a newly renovated unit and it’s amazing, new appliances and floors. The amount of closet space and overall space is great. This building has a rich community and lovely neighbors. I moved from a high rise luxury building in Weehawken and can honestly say I’m enjoying this way more. The building is under new management and I see the constant improvements. There’s a lot of potential here and great for someone who is looking for a comforting place to live close to everything you need in Montclair!
Issues with communication, addressing large issues, and inappropriate challenging of tenants. Also, constant construction noise and potent cleaning solution smells.
dont believe the fake positive reviews. current tenants can't even get the new owner to put the heat on. this place is a ghost town from everyone leaving. building owner is shameful and mean to tenants because they have rent control.
What a great place to call "home". Newly renovated units. The entire staff is always courteous and very quick to attend to any issues that arise. The grounds and facilities are kept clean every single day. The pool area is spacious and the pool sparkling clean. Convenient elevator and covered parking garage!! Safe area and beautiful neighborhood. Located amidst various shops, restaurants, transportation and good schools. Rent is moderately low for the area. **10/10 Recommend**
I am currently in the process of relocating because of a last minute job transfer, so things in my life have been hectic. Fortunately, my living situation has been handled with ease. As soon as I drove onto the property, as cliche as it sounds, I felt at home. I love how neat the property looks as soon as you drive in and the town of Montclair is a really fun town. Great for families or single households. Karen in the office has been a God send and made my move easier. The building has top of the line amenities, great swimming pool, a new Barbecue area , the Loft looks like an Hotel , they even have a very modern concierge system that works on your cellphone and safely receives your packages ( big plus on these days specially on holiday shopping). The new management is on top of everything and they are constantly making improvements in the building which is a good sign. I'm glad I chose Hawthorne Towers as my new home .
As former tenants who recently moved out, we advise you to stay far away from this situation. The apartments are literally rotting from the insides out and our ceiling began to collapse. When management continuously ignored our requests to address the situation, we finally got the hell out. The new owner has installed all of these eyeball cameras all over the property that record both video and sound (per his own words, he sees and hears everything in the building). It wouldn't surprise us if he installed cameras in the new apartments as well. The building is under heavy contruction daily causing us to move out as we both worked from home and the noise level during the day is deafening. Don't waste your money here, there are so many nicer and newer places to live in Montclair for the same or less money.

These negative reviews are not accurate. There are a few residents that have not paid their rent and are posting these untrue reviews in haste as a result of the owner taking appropriate action. The new owner took over the building just a few months ago and is investing a lot of money into renovations to update and fix the building. It’s ironic that the person writing this review is complaining they want the units updated but they don’t want to be bothered by noise of renovating. Regarding security cameras, they were installed for the safety of residents in the general manor that all buildings of this scale require and inspected by the town for compliance.
Do not live here. Building is very poorly managed. AC does not work. Any maintenance request you need done will be ignored. Residents have been living with mold, leaking ceilings, no AC, broken appliances, the list goes on... Pool looks nothing like the pictures- It is clearly an airbrushed photo. The new owner is a slumlord and only cares about taking your money. He will screw you over and take every nickel and dime he can get out of you. He has driven so many residents out over the last couple of months, many of whom had lived here for years prior. There are so many other nicer places to live in Montclair. Please don't waste your time even looking here.

Some of the long time tenants are upset that the building is being updated therefore their historically under market rents will eventually be raised and so they are understandably upset if they cannot afford the increase but posting untrue information to deter future tenants is shameful. The new owner has been updating with all new appliances and fixtures and resolving issues that existed under prior management and has a historically very good reputation.
The owner does not invest in maintaining this property. Facade is filthy. Air conditioning does not cool, and actually creates moisture (humidity in my apartment 80%). Leaking from a/c unit in above apartment dripping on my head. Any request for fixing a problem is either ignored or greeted with an argument (telling the tenant that nothing is wrong), insolence and rudeness. Upon staff's refusal to clean heating/cooling vents, I opened them myself and the filth, dirt, mold and rust was revolting. Stay away! So many better places to live in Montclair.
This building is so well-run,, clean and cheerful. The maintenance staff is attentive, always willing to help, hard-working. The manager is on top of everything, runs a tight ship. We have had no covid cases! She is concerned and thoughtful, aware of anyone who is ill, helpful, kind. I have found a real home here.
Would not recommend living here. Any maintenance issue that is not basic takes months to fix. We had a terribly leaky roof for three years, air conditioners barely cool, pool is constantly closed, and management is more than difficult and unpleasant to deal with. Management and tenants are unfriendly towards younger residents. Owners don't care about the building and raise rents despite not investing in the building. The "gym" has broken equipment in a tiny room that is unsafe. The entire top floor has experienced significant water damage causing mold that is just covered up with paint annually. Had an active drip from the ceiling and the "solution" was a bucket in the middle of the room for months. Front desk staff is friendly. Only nice thing I can say!
I love this place. I have lived in a few other locations and by far the utilities included and off street parking are what make this place stellar. Each room has A/C, ours has a dishwasher and there are quarter machines in the basement for washing and drying your clothing. If you can get a room at Hawthorne Towers I highly recommend it.
