Like its neighbor, Winter Park, Goldenrod prides itself on being a foodie's paradise, with dining establishments ranging from family-run pizzerias and upscale sushi joints to ethnic eateries from all around the world. Truly the only problem Goldenrod residents have when it rolls around to dinnertime is deciding which exciting option to pick.

Anna's Polish Restaurant, located on Aloma Avenue, considers itself a fine dining establishment, serving up a variety of traditional Polish dishes. If it's your first visit, you must try out the Polish Platter with a hearty sampling of pierogi, stuffed cabbage with tomato or mushroom sauce, grilled kielbasa and polish sauerkraut. Wash this mountain of food down with a classic Polish beer.

For a taste from the other side of the world, check out Mi Viejo San Juan, a family-run Puerto Rican restaurant with authentic Puerto Rican dishes and a killer sangria. Try the mofongo (deep-fried plantains) and the addictive rotating soup selections. Come on a Saturday to score the Sancocho de Res, a hearty beef soup.

If you are in the mood for something lighter, stop in at Yuki Hana on Aloma Avenue for some sushi or small plates. Try unique dishes like the Veggie Sushi Napoleon, a fascinating combination of fennel, lettuce, asparagus, avocado, cucumber, honey miso sauce and crushed pistachio. Also try the fresh asparagus with poached egg, miso dressing and furikake, a traditional Japanese seasoning. Top it off with a flavor-infused sake.

After hours, Goldenrod offers a variety of entertainment venues, ranging from dive bars and sports bars to hookah lounges and pool halls. Visit the Thirsty Gator, a Florida Gators-themed sports bar and oyster bar run by a former Florida football player. You could also hop over to the Haven Lounge on Aloma Avenue for live bands, open mic nights or a game of pool.

The name Goldenrod was purportedly derived from the wildflower that once grew abundantly in the area's fields and woods. The first non-native settlers in the Goldenrod area came through in the 1870s, but the community didn't really start to develop until the 1920s, when a series of suburban homes were built by northerners. Some of these classic homes still exist to this day.

The Goldenrod Historical Museum on Palmetto Avenue provides an in-depth look into the area's past and the notable residents who helped Goldenrod grow into a prosperous community. The Historical Society also hosts the annual Goldenrod Festival and Parade in October, with a pancake breakfast, carnival atmosphere and craft vendors adding to the festivities.

Although the streets of Goldenrod aren't known for being bike-friendly, the multiple bicycle/pedestrian paths crossing through the area allow ample opportunities for enjoying the outdoors. Well-maintained sidewalks are common throughout residential areas, and public parking is rarely an issue, which really helps since daily errands will likely require a personal vehicle in most cases. A number of Lynx bus stops are scattered throughout Goldenrod, though. Furthermore, Uber's ride-sharing service and its convenient phone app present a viable option, covering most of the Orlando metro area. You can also call a cab company to schedule a ride.

The cost of living in Goldenrod remains comparable to Orlando as a whole, with the average rental rate for a one-bedroom apartment costing approximately $774. Buying a cup of coffee in a local coffee house or a domestic beer in a local pub will each likely cost around $3 to $4. The neighborhood gas prices sit right around the national average.

Although not as boutique-heavy as nearby Winter Park, Goldenrod does house a few unique shopping opportunities. Visit The Owl's Attic, a hidden gem on Forsyth Road, for vintage clothing, jewelry, toys, knick-knacks and local art. Made entirely from recycled materials, the shop pleases the eye with its quirky and one-of-a-kind appearance.

Tess's Pre-Owned Furniture and Collectibles, another local favorite, primarily sells furniture but also stocks decorations and even cookbooks. With reasonable prices, this shop proves vintage charm doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.

While Goldenrod houses chain stores like Publix and Walmart Neighborhood Markets, other options sit close by as well. Check out Fancy Fruit and Produce on Goldenrod Road for a vast array of produce and meats, as well as Latin American foodstuffs. Although Goldenrod does not host its own farmers market, neighboring Winter Park claims one of the largest and most popular farmers markets in central Florida just a short drive away.

Goldenrod is known for housing the northern trailhead of the Cady Way Trail, a 6.5-mile rail trail running through the Orlando area. Constructed along the abandoned roadbed of the East Florida and Atlantic Railroad, the trail starts at Hall Road at Aloma Avenue and runs south, stopping at the Orlando Fashion Square Mall. The dog-friendly wide asphalt path features separate lanes for bikes and pedestrians, and it also provides regular shelters, rest stops with water fountains and places to dispose of dog waste, making it great for a recreational bike or jog with your family or pet.

The Cady Way Trail connects to other local trails, like the Cross Seminole Trail, and passes by a number of parks. One of these, Goldenrod Park, is a neighborhood park with playgrounds for children and one of the area's Orange County-Orlando Magic Recreation Centers. These centers, available at parks throughout the county, provide residents of all ages with opportunities to play volleyball, enroll in fitness classes and many other amenities.
