Restaurants

Restaurant offerings in the area reflect the diverse population of Evergreen with everything from street tacos to authentic Vietnamese pho. Vegans and vegetarians should have no difficulty eating well here.

The Cantonese cuisine at Hong Kong Asian Diner features a large selection of hard-to-find Chinese dishes, including deep-fried duck, garlic snow peas and salty dried scallops. For a large meal, try the Peking duck, which comes to your table in two plates. The first is crunchy, fat-marbled skin, and the second brings a large portion of moist duck meat.

Hummus Xpress, a casual Mediterranean eatery, stocks an array of tasty hummus, homemade salads, hot vegetables and slow-cooked meats for under $10 each. Customers can build their own exotic creations, or they can let the owner take the reins for a more adventurous meal. Do not skip the amazing falafels with their blend of roasted veggies over Yemeni hot sauce.

Lima-born chef Walter Salazar serves traditional Peruvian cuisine at Villa Peru. This cozy restaurant houses a lengthy menu of raw and cured meats, acidic aromatic flavors and tongue-tingling spices. Villa Peru does not serve alcohol, but the spicy and sweet chichi morada, or Peruvian corn juice, goes great with appetizers such as the langostinos or anticuchos. Other must-try items include Salazar's ceviche and the exotic ice cream made with Peru's lucuma fruit.

Grab a drink and a dance partner at one of Evergreen’s locally owned saloons, such as School of Rock. This spot combines rock and roll, heavy electronic and classic American tunes. Shining bottles of booze decorate the walls, and sparkling stars hang down from the neon-lit ceiling. Come on the weekends for live performances.

For something other than loud music and crowded dance clubs, check out the laid-back atmosphere of Sleepy Dog Saloon and Brewery. This popular spot, established in 2009, sells an impressive assortment of house-made brews and craft beers. It's well known brews are found throughout the state of Arizona, in addition to parts of California. Try your luck on the “Wheel of Deals” for a chance to win a free pint. Residents should also show up on Thursday nights for the brewery's open mic night, which starts at 7 pm.

History

The Hohokam tribe, who initially settled the area, constructed a robust canal system to support their agriculture. It still stands today. During the 15th century, however, the tribe mysteriously abandoned the land, with only a few individuals remaining behind.

In 1865, the construction of Fort McDowell allowed for the development of new towns farther down the Salt River. Less than a year later, they small camps developed near the river, which eventually became the first western communities in town.

Evergreen features beautiful weather year-round and a calendar filled with artistic events. The Fantasy of Lights Festival brings downtown Tempe alive every year. Tempe’s History Museum houses a collection of music items from Walt Richardson, Waylon Jennings, Jimmy Eat World and other stars.

Transportation

Getting around Evergreen rarely proves difficult. The community sits less than 10 miles away from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and has one of the most comprehensive freeway access systems in the nation. Affordable parking and light traffic make driving a car ideal.

Residents can also take the Metro light rail or Tempe’s public bus system to travel the greater Phoenix area. The Metro light rail provides convenient links to downtown Phoenix, with two stops in the airport. The suburban location of the area makes it difficult to hail a cab off the street. However, you can arrange a pickup with a local taxi company. Uber and Lyft serve the community, too. The college town has ample sidewalks and miles of clearly marked bike paths.

Cost

With a cost of living less than that of the Cincinnati area, living in Evergreen means residents have affordable options for dining, entertainment and buying groceries. The average cost of renting a one-bedroom apartment comes to $775 per month. Hopping on the Metro light rail system costs $2 for a one-way fare. Gas generally sits about 9 percent lower than the national average, and you can expect to pay around $4 for a pint of beer at the local pubs.

Shopping

Funky and original shops line Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe. Design your own clothing at Brand X Custom T-Shirts, where you can choose graphics and fonts for a t-shirt. Candy Addict sells nostalgic sweets and more than 1,500 varieties of international, specialty, and well-known candy brands.

Tempe Marketplace provides outdoor shopping opportunities and live music on the weekends. Major retailers in the mall include mid-priced Sears, Macy's, and Express. The Arizona Mills shopping mall has Prada, Gucci, Coach, and other upscale designer stores.

Tempe Farmers Market features organic produce, fruits, salads and fresh sandwiches at affordable prices. Residents can also shop for groceries at the Safeway on East Broadway Road, a long-time supermarket chain that includes a deli, bakery and butcher shop. Eco-minded buyers prefer the Whole Foods Market in College Park.

Parks

Children can burn off energy at Daley Park, which features a large playground, picnic tables and basketball courts. Run or ride your bike at Daumler Park, an expansive space with an array of pathways winding around a peaceful lake. Dog owners can lose the leash in the pet-friendly area located at the southern end of the park.

The 125-acre Kiwanis Park in Mill Avenue has state-of-the-art batting cages, wave pools and a variety of fields for sports. It also hosts the popular Movies in the Park event, a showcase of family-friendly films under the stars.
