West Washington is steeped in history, its journey tracing its beginnings as part of South Bend’s canal project in the 1800s. The area saw an expansion in the late 19th-Century, followed by its decline in the 20th-Century, before a renaissance turned things around again. Finally, it emerged as the culturally diverse, community-focused neighborhood that it is today.

West Washington is home to the West Washington National Register Historic District – the first National Register historic district in South Bend. Get familiar with the area’s interesting background by visiting a number of world class sites including Indiana University South Bend’s Civil Rights Heritage Center, the Northern Indiana Center for History, the Studebaker National Museum and Copshaholm House Museum. These locations can also be enjoyed by the community as a whole during annual events such as summertime Music in the Gardens, held outside the Center for History.

While the area lacks quantity of eating and drinking establishments, it certainly makes up in quality, and residents cherish their select, long-standing dining destinations.

One such destination, Frankie’s BBQ serves what regulars call the best barbeque in the area. With smoky flavours, a good dosing of sauce and a varied menu, the restaurant knows how to satisfy the diner’s need for a traditional American barbeque. The locals recommend the chicken or ribs.

Patrons receive a unique dining experience at Tippecanoe Place, surrounded by 19th-Century manor architecture while being served elegant American meals. Dishes are cooked to perfection and accommodate those with special dietary needs. This, along with a good atmosphere, ensures diners enjoy a sophisticated experience. Visit during the popular Sunday brunch, and make sure not to miss out on the omelettes, or opt for the lamb chops on other occasions.

When seeking evening entertainment later that night, travel the very short distance to the city for bars including Irish pub Fiddler’s Hearth and CJ’s Pub. Other night-time options include wine and whisky bars, as well as concert venue and multi-level dance club, Fever.
