In the 1860s, German immigrants moved to the area, and they established the first breweries. Waves of Polish, Czech, Irish and Scandinavian immigrants followed, and eventually, a large wave of Italians settled in the area, earning it the nickname of "Little Italy."

A range of museums in nearby downtown St. Paul, including a science museum, a history center, an art museum and a children's museum among others, provide something for everybody's tastes.
