Historia

-

Known as the second largest city in Georgia, Augusta was founded in 1736 by James Oglethorpe. It originally thrived as a trading post during revolutionary times, but later staggered in trade. After the revolution, the town plan started to expand to the south, east, and west, but still didn’t reach the radius they’re at today. From 1786-1795, Augusta was made the temporary capital of the new state of Georgia. At this time many leaders of government began to move to the area, one of which was signer of the Declaration of Independence George Walton.

Expansion further west grew in the 20th century, though many homes in West Augusta weren’t built until 1940, with the bulk of the homes being built after the 1970’s.
