Historia

-

Summit Place sits within the central region of El Paso, a city founded in 1680. Once called "Six Shooter Capital" because of all the outlaws living in the city, El Paso shook that image around World War I when city leaders increased their law enforcement efforts. The city has grown steadily since that time, maintaining a diverse group of citizens and industries within its borders.

The neighborhood doesn't have any museums; however, Ho Baron can be found a short drive south. This art gallery features bronze sculptures relating to a variety of topics. Although the area doesn't have any annual events, the Sun Bowl takes place at the nearby Sun Bowl Stadium, southwest of Summit Place.

Restaurantes y Bares

-

Summit Place features a variety of inexpensive restaurants showcasing diverse international cuisines sprinkled throughout the area.

Thai Chef Cafe gives diners the experience of a traditional Thai meal, with a casual, quiet vibe. Bamboo by the windows adds to the ambiance of this relaxing restaurant. The curries stand out as some of the better choices on the menu, and the chef can make it as spicy as you want it. Make sure to get the Thai tea with your meal for the perfect refreshment during those hot summer days.

If you prefer a taste south of the border, try Kiki's Mexican Restaurant. Attentive, friendly servers treat you like family the moment you walk in the door, and the food tastes like a home-cooked meal. Don't leave without trying Kiki's famous machaca. Choose from brisket, chicken or crab, and Kiki's handles the rest, with veggies, eggs and green sauce to add an extra kick of flavor.

Whether you want to get your sushi fix or a protein-packed dinner, check out Kee's Teriyaki. With healthy dishes at low prices, this restaurant gives you an ideal place to grab a bite without feeling guilty afterward. Menu highlights include the chicken and beef teriyaki, either of which can be ordered spicy if you want to turn up the heat. If you prefer sushi, definitely try the dragon rolls.

As far as nightlife goes, the neighborhood has a varied blend of neighborhood bars, dance clubs and dives. When you want to watch the game, stop by Tanya's Gridiron. The bar has a fun yet laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for shooting some pool or throwing darts while downing inexpensive drinks. Tanya's keeps the music going day and night, except on karaoke nights when the crowd gets a turn.

Residents of Summit Place have multiple ways to get around, with driving, taking the bus and walking all proving reliable travel methods.

Motorists have quick highway access, starting with Texas State Highway 54 a short drive east of the neighborhood. That highway runs north and south, connecting with Spur 601 to the north and Interstate 10 to the south. Both of these highways run east and west. Use Interstate 10 for traveling through El Paso. Another option is to take Spur 601 east to Loop 375, which loops around part of the city. This neighborhood allows street parking; just read the signs first.

Sun Metro buses service the city, with routes 36 and 41 traveling through Summit Place and several other routes available nearby. Taxis and ride-share companies like Uber also service the neighborhood. Pick up times vary.

With flat terrain and amenities a short distance away, this neighborhood can be traveled on foot for certain errands. Biking provides a faster alternative, but a lack of bike lanes around this area means you should have some experience before riding around the streets.

Parques

-

Summit Place got creative with the Van Buren Dam, a water reservoir that doubles as a 4,500-square-foot skate park. Designed with skaters in mind, the dam features a pair of blocks with flat backs that allow skaters to keep their momentum going. Steps that bring to mind the Mayan pyramids complete the experience. The dam welcomes skaters of all ages, and it doesn't have any fees.

Go to Grandview Park for tennis courts, an outdoor pool, a baseball diamond, basketball courts and a multi-purpose field. Admittance to the pool comes with a small fee, either $1 or $2 depending on your age, while other areas of the park can be used free of charge. With playgrounds for the kids and a senior center for older adults, this park truly does cater to all age groups. An annual summer concert series plays at several parks throughout El Paso, including Grandview Park. Stop by for free music played by local musicians.

Costo

-

Summit Place carries a lower cost of living than the El Paso average, with more affordable housing being the primary difference. A one-bedroom apartment rents for an average of $575 a month.

A Metro ride to the city center costs $1.50 for a one way ticket, and gas prices come in around 15 percent lower than the national average. A pint at the local pub usually costs about $3.

Compras

-

The neighborhood has both independent and major retailers, along with the Fort Bliss Post Exchange for those in the military.

Whether you just started reading comics or you've done it for decades, check out All Star Comics & Games. The extensive selection includes comics from every era at reasonable prices. With a friendly owner, fun decor that includes a life-size "Incredible Hulk," toys and even some games, this shop attracts both children and adults.

Those in the market for a new bike should stop by Dyer Cycle. Don't be fooled by the store front; it may not look like much of a bike shop from the outside, but inside, the store contains all kinds of bikes and components. Dyer Cycle also has mechanics to repair bikes, and prices tend to be on the low side. You can also find power tools and clothing here.

The Walmart Supercenter, found a short drive north on Dyer Street, stands as the closest major grocery store. Summit Place doesn't have any farmers markets, but one takes place downtown on Saturday mornings.
