Historia

Native tribes once roamed the lands that are now part of Sabre Springs, as evidenced by nearby archaeological sites. Used predominantly as cattle ranching lands throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, much of what is now Sabre Springs eventually came under the ownership of the Chadwick family — the same Chadwick family famous swimmer Florence Chadwick came from.

The City of San Diego decided to develop the area in the late 1970s. Today, Sabre Springs continues to flourish as a friendly and welcoming community where outdoor recreation and time with family are highly valued.

Sabre Springs shares a proud history with the entire San Diego area, and surrounding neighborhoods continue to honor Southern California’s pioneering heritage. About 5 miles from Sabre Springs, The Poway Heritage Museum houses artifacts chronicling regional history. The small museum is maintained by the local historical society and can make a fun little detour for the family.

Several mainstay fast food and chain restaurants are concentrated along Scripps Poway Parkway, which runs east/west just south of the main residential area. Since Sabre Springs is such a small community, you will have to venture into surrounding neighborhoods to get to some of the great nearby eateries and to experience a bit more of a nightlife.

Visit Nutmeg Bakery and Café on any given morning for a hip environment where you can get goodies made using sustainable, locally-sourced ingredients. Everything here is freshly made, and if you can catch one of the pastries fresh from the oven you won’t soon forget about it. The scones are especially amazing. If you come for breakfast, try the incomparable French Toast. Plus, you can get a good latte that makes Nutmeg a local gem all by itself for just a few bucks.

A few minutes to the east in Poway, the Old West-themed Hamburger Factory serves award-winning burgers — over a dozen of them — along with more greasy spoon gourmet. The Kobe Burger is especially tasty and goes perfectly with the thick milkshakes. After you eat, walk off a few calories exploring Old Poway Park.

When it comes to nightlife, be sure to venture to the southern edge of Sabre Springs and pay a visit to Sanctuary Lounge, a place that seems like it would be just as at home downtown as it is on these suburban streets. A large selection of premium beer and wine along with a rich decor lends an executive feeling to the atmosphere. An outdoor humidor provides a place to enjoy one of the lounge’s many fine cigars. If you’re hungry, this establishment will have food brought in from nearby restaurants.

A 30 minute drive from San Diego International Airport, Sabre Springs Parkway runs through the neighborhood and serves as its main thoroughfare. Feel free to walk or bike the length of the parkway, which features meticulously landscaped medians. However, unless you plan to stay right within central Sabre Springs, other means of transportation will probably be in order.

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System runs routes through Sabre Springs, and you can use the buses to get just about anywhere in the greater San Diego area. An expansive transit station offers park-and-ride services for commuters.

You can call a number of cab services that operate out of surrounding areas and serve Sabre Springs. You can also get use Uber to find nearby drivers and schedule a pickup.

Sabre Springs has become known for its natural beauty, showcased by the trails and parks in and around it. South Creek Park sits on Wickerbay Cove next to an elementary school and has a little league field as well as a playground. Peñasquitos Trail is accessible from the park. The trail, which runs along Peñasuitos Creek, is part of the Trans-County Corridor trail system.

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve sits just 10 minutes west of central Sabre Springs and provides ample opportunity for outdoor recreation and wilderness exploration. The preserve features waterfalls, nature trails and the ancient remains of the people who once inhabited these fertile lands. A field trip here can provide a great opportunity to check out the diverse local plant and animal life.

They also sell locally made souvenirs that you won’t see in the more tourist-oriented shops closer to the beaches.

For other interesting gift ideas, talk to the friendly people at Family Plaques & More. Another family-owned local business, Family Plaques creates customized plaques and gifts, so you can have a personalized sign or plaque made for your home or business, or commission one as a very cool souvenir, wedding, housewarming or thank you gift. The store usually has some kind of sale going on, so be sure to ask to see if you can save yourself a few bucks.

The Scripp’s Ranch Farmers Market sits only about a mile from central Sabre Springs along Scripps Poway Parkway. An array of vendors offer all kinds of regionally produced delicacies, including fresh fruits and vegetables, artisan cheeses, smoked fish and local wine.
