Historia

The neighborhood became established in 1885 when Henry B. Plant developed the area. Plant built a railroad line and a port, including the St. Elmo Inn and Port Tampa Inn in order to attract visitors, hoping to turn them into residents. As the primary port for the Spanish-American War in Cuba, Port Tampa City hosted over 33,000 military personnel in 1898. Many remained in the area post-war. The city was annexed in 1961; however, residents still recall the area's heritage. In 1993, the town hosted a centennial commemoration, which featured home tours and a block party to celebrate its history.

Travel 10 miles out of Port Tampa City to the Tampa Bay History Center and learn about Tampa's history. This museum hosts an annual gala, which brings together community members and raises funds for the History Center's education programs. View the local arts scene at the Tampa Museum of Art.

Although some residential streets maintain bike-friendliness, you should stick to nearby trails rather than trying to walk or bike on busy roadways.

Take some time to enjoy the beautiful weather at local parks. Just four miles from Port Tampa City lies Ballast Point Park, which features a small walking pier and a boat dock for water sports.
