Historia

-

The area that comprises modern-day Northgate was once entirely agricultural land. It also served as a major stop for railways, and farmers would bring in their produce to ship it to other cities to sale. Very few houses existed until after World War II, when a major population influx resulted in a significant increase in housing developments.

You can relive this history by visiting the Museum of Local History in Fremont, which houses Indian artifacts and items from the pioneer days. Also visit the museum at Mission San Jose, one of the Spanish missions in California, an essential part of understanding the history of the state.

The Fremont Cultural Arts Council hosts many events throughout the year, including an art show in Shinn Park and a juried photography contest. Explore galleries of local art at the Olive Hyde Art Guild, which has frequently rotating exhibitions.

Northgate residents have easy access to several restaurants that line Fremont Boulevard. Indulge in a bowl of banana split gelato at Sweet Orchid. The gelato selection changes daily, and every flavor is made right in the store. For a special treat, get your gelato sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookies or pick a slice of red velvet cake from the bakery case. The staff also makes cakes to order that can be the star of the show at any party or special occasion.

Satisfy your cravings for Japanese food at Mioki Sushi. The mountain roll, made with crab, shrimp and avocado, ranks among the favorite selections, and everyone raves about the plates of free tempura green beans provided with the meal. Daily lunch specials make the restaurant a great place to sit down and enjoy lunch.

Many locals consider Taqueria El Mex-Cal the best place to eat Mexican food. Nothing satiates intense hunger like the carne asada fries, smothered in cheese and guacamole. Many people also stop in for the garlic shrimp quesadilla, which pairs well with a michelada. The quick service and large portions make this the perfect place to grab food on the go.

For nightlife options, you need to travel to Fremont or Union City. If you want a casual night out in a dive bar, head over to The Mojo Lounge in Fremont to enjoy a drink with friends. The large selection of draft beers draws in many customers, as do the live bands that play on weekends.
