-

Due to its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River, the city of Mobile first rose to prominence as a shipping and trade center during the 1700s. Though Union forces destroyed and blockaded Mobile's harbor during the Civil War, the end of the war brought a period of economic prosperity to Mobile as ship building and trading flourished. During WWII, product demands increased, despite a diminishing workforce due to the draft. The abundance of jobs created an exponential growth in popularity during the second half of the 1900s, which forced Mobile to grow outwards and develop new neighborhoods like Malibar Heights. Even today, Malibar Heights' primarily houses the working professionals of Mobile.

Unfortunately, Malibar Heights' does not contain a flourishing art scene, nor do any museums make a residence in the neighborhood. However, the downtown History Museum of Mobile does pay tribute to the area's heritage.

Most of Malibar Heights' restaurants cluster around the intersection of South University Boulevard and Cottage Hill Road, including Meat Boss BBQ. Most residents of Malibar Heights leave the neighborhood on nights out, and because of this, no bars operate within the neighborhood's limits. The pub serves up classic Irish dishes, including Reubens and corned beef and cabbage. Order some Scotch eggs and a beer to wash it down, and find your meal delivered by a barmaid dressed in a traditional kilt.
