Established in 1733, Savannah has been an important location throughout American history. As a strategic port during its early years, Savannah has morphed into an important American industrial port.

Most homes in the Lundhurst-Rivers End area were built from 1959 to 1999. Only 11 were standing prior to 1939. The closest historical sites are just 2.5 miles east at the Isle of Hope. The Wormsloe State Historic Sites highlight 18th century ruins of a colonial estate. Just minutes from there, the Isle of Hope historic district can be accessed. This area is known for its extensive historic plantations and beautiful gardens.

While the neighborhood is quiet and suburban, a variety of chain and locally owned restaurants surround it. The area offers moderate nightlife activities with only a few cocktail bars in the immediate vicinity. Just to the northwest, many chain restaurants can be found.

To the west, Troy Mediterranean Cuisine cooks up authentic Greek dishes. Customers enjoy the quick service without compromising taste. Kebabs, gyros and lamb are a few of the best-loved dishes. Troy offers a charming change from the usual Southern Savannah dining options.

Described by locals as Southern Savannah’s best-kept secret, Panaderia La Canasta serves up real Mexican dishes in addition to freshly baked goods. Menudo, al pastor tacos topped with Devil hot sauce and homemade breads are fan-favorite recommendations. Of course, you can’t leave without trying the one-of-a-kind paletas, with flavors including tamarind, rice and mango-chile that are the perfect way to cool down after a spicy meal.

A few taverns and bars are located close by the neighborhood. Stop by Jerry’s Lounge for karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights. Small but fun, Jerry’s has a pool table, dart boards and a jukebox to kickstart your night.

While there are no bike lanes in the Lundhurst-Rivers End area, traveling by bicycle is possible but only on the residential streets. Chatham Area Transit runs bus routes throughout the neighborhoods. Abercrom Street, White Bluff Road, Montgomery Cross Road, and Waters Avenue all have bus routes with frequent service. It takes only 40 minutes to travel to the center of the city by bus.

Rivers End lies no more than a mile away from main highways, including the Harry S. Truman Parkway and Veterans Highway. Both of these highways provide easy access in all directions. By car, it only takes 20 minutes to drive to the city.

While vast marshland covers the southern tip of Rivers End, there are outdoor recreational places nearby. Just a few miles northwest, next to the Hunter Army Airfield, Hunter Golf Club unites the civilian and military communities. This club provides families with golfing opportunities along with other fitness programs.

A beautiful park on the eastern side of the neighborhood, Lake Mayer Park is equipped for tennis, basketball, softball, handball, volleyball and more. The park features a paved 1.5-mile jogging and bicycling track that includes a fitness course for exercise enthusiasts. A lighted hockey rink counts as one of the unique attributes of this recreational area.

Locals who visit this park take advantage of the dog exercise area, while others enjoy fishing in the stocked freshwater lake. Lake Mayer Park is the site of the Savannah Sailing Center, which uses the park's boat ramps. The park also has a community center that is open year round, offering karate classes, tennis instruction and a kids summer camp. Stop by this park when the community center is sponsoring one of its popular remote control car races for a fun family outing. Access to the park and parking is free; however, rental fees are charged for private use of facilities such as the picnic pavilions, community center conference room and park spaces.

For peaceful outings and calm strolls, the Savannah Botanical Gardens are just a few miles north. Walking trails, an amphitheater and a historic colonial home are highlights of this relaxing area preserved by the Garden Club of Savannah.The Reinhard House, moved to the Gardens from downtown in 1990, is a beautiful piece of history.

Quality Bike Shop sits right on Montgomery Cross Road north of the area. Local cyclists love the knowledgeable staff and describe this shop as the best of its kind in Savannah.
