Historia

-

South Houston was originally referred to as Dumont, founded in 1907, but became incorporated as South Houston in 1913. A post office was constructed in 1910. Agriculture was an early industry, specifically strawberry, fig, and vegetable production. These agricultural products were shipped via the railroad to Henderson, Galveston, and Houston. Population increases were experienced during the 1940s through the 1960s, and by 1960, small industries including asphalt, wire products, and oilfield chemical manufacturing opened up shop in the area.

The 1940 Air Terminal Museum located on the William P. Hobby airport grounds showcases memorabilia, aircraft, and uniforms from aviation history in a very interesting art deco building. The Houston Fine Art Fair highlights local artists from around the Houston metro area during three nights in downtown.
