Historia

-

The city of Evansville began as McGary's Landing in 1812. Hugh McGary Jr. purchased the land and renamed it after Colonel Robert Morgan Evans in 1814. The city thrived after the Civil War, becoming home to a large number of companies, and other major growth periods occurred in the early 20th century and after World War II.

This area has one art gallery, Nance Galleries, nearby and the Angel Mounds State Historic Site a short drive away. That site also includes a museum. Annual events take place in Evansville, but not within the outer-east neighborhood.

Restaurantes y Bares

-

Restaurants in this neighborhood range from affordable to upscale, with several ethnic cuisines represented. When you feel like having a quiet dinner or a romantic evening, try Cork 'n Cleaver. This upscale restaurant sports a southwestern theme as the decor adds a nice twist to the traditional steakhouse vibe. Try the fillet and scallops for the perfect mix of surf and turf, and grab some greens at the exceptional salad bar before your main meal.

Acropolis serves traditional American cuisine alongside Greek favorites. The saganaki appetizer comes to your table as sauteed kasseri cheese flamed in brandy. Order pork commandaria to experience pork tenderloin sauteed in white wine, thyme, and mushroom sauce over rice and asparagus. Try Acropolis for something laid-back yet fancy.

As far as nightlife goes, this area has plenty of neighborhood bars that feature music and games. Stop by KC's Time Out Lounge and Grill for a fun blend of people, live music, and games. KC's has pool tables, video games and darts for those with a competitive streak, but you can just watch sports on TV if you prefer. Don't worry about breaking the bank here either -- this lounge keeps prices low.

Transporte

-

Driving and taking the bus are the most reliable transportation options for residents of this neighborhood. The area provides quick highway access, with Indiana State Road 66 running east and west through the neighborhood and into downtown Evansville. You can also take Interstate 69 for trips around the south end of the city or north heading out of Evansville. Many streets around the neighborhood allow parking, but be sure to read the signs for any restrictions before you park.

Metropolitan Evansville Transit System buses service the city, and routes on Walnut, Lincoln and Washington travel through the outer-east neighborhood. Taxis also service the area, but ride-share companies do not.

While you can walk to complete certain commutes and errands, these usually require another travel method. Cyclists enjoy flat terrain, but most streets don't have any bike lanes.

Parques

-

Residents have plenty of opportunities to get active – park options throughout the area include nature preserves and trampoline parks. If you feel like connecting with nature, visit the Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve. Walk the wildlife trails, and let helpful employees answer any questions you have about particular animals or plants. The preserve accepts donations, but it doesn't charge admission. It also holds several events throughout the year, including an Earth Day event with plenty of hiking. Some events are free.

If you're into bouncing around, head over to Skyzone. Flying through the air over the trampolines is the main attraction, but this park keeps it interesting with dodgeball courts, a foam block pit you can jump into and basketball hoops for dunking. Those who want to get in better shape can try the Skyrobics class and get a unique workout. The fees here vary based on the activity.

Evansville doesn't have any dog parks, but you can bring your on-leash dog to Price Park. Featuring five soccer fields, this space fills up on game days, but it also has areas for walking and playgrounds for the kids.

Costo

-

This neighborhood has a lower cost of living than downtown Evansville. A one bedroom apartment rents for an average of $578 a month.

A Metro ride to the city center costs $1 for a one-way ticket, and gas prices come in around 1 percent higher than the national average. A pint at the local pub usually costs around $2.

Compras

-

Get all your shopping done at shopping centers, such as the Eastland Mall or the Washington Square Mall, or spend your time checking out the independent boutiques located throughout the Outer East neighborhood.

Small business line Green River Road to the north and south, including jewelers, florists and fabric shops. Bargain hunters come here to score deals on gently used threads at the several vintage stores. Those looking for a broad selection of styles should drop by Strouse's Consignment, a well-organized storefront with women's and men's clothing as well as home goods, such as tableware and framed art. Those wanting an edgier look should head to Abyssco, which offers an eclectic selection of retro and punk-inspired clothes alongside paintings, used books and music.

For high-quality toys that help children learn and grow, take your kids to Toys To Treasure. The warm, accommodating atmosphere makes you and your little ones feel at home right away, and you can try out the merchandise before you buy anything, including products designed to stimulate fine motor control, problem solving and creative thinking.

For grocery shopping, major stores in the area include a Wal-Mart Supercenter, Target and The Fresh Market. While the neighborhood doesn't have any farmers markets, those looking for natural foods can shop at Elbert's Natural Food Market.
